When we entered the house, we found it empty. The others must not have arrived yet. How long did my funeral last?
We put away the fake candles, the music player, the picnic blanket and Emmett poured the red liquid down the drain. I went to wipe my feet off, because I had just spent the day in a field, but I looked as clean as ever. I slipped my shoes back on and went to sit down on the couch. Emmett sat next to me and started watching a football game, on the flat screen tv.
It was dark out, and the lights weren't on, so the room was dim. He sat closer than necessary, considering how big the couch was. Our legs were almost touching.
Should I take the risk? I really wanted to, but if he did, why didn't he just sit closer to me? What if he didn't like me in that way, and he was just being nice? I mean, it is his fault that I'm a vampire, maybe he wanted to be kind.
No, I was being silly. He wouldn't have asked me out, made such an effort, asked me out again, and let me kiss him twice, just to be nice. He was probably just trying to respect my boundaries, so I would show him that it was okay. Welcomed, even.
I subtly tried to scooch closer to Emmett, enough so that our legs were an inch apart. He glanced down, and tried to hide a smile, but I saw it anyway. He lifted his arm and put it on the couch behind my head, as if he was asking permission before putting his arm around me. I leaned my head back, so the back of my head was settled into the crook of his elbow, and closed the space between ourselves, my legs curling up into a ball and closing my eyes.
"I can turn the game off if you don't want to watch it," he said, "We can watch or do something else."
"Shut up and let me enjoy the moment," I said, "I'll just listen to the voices."
He chuckled, and tightened his hold around my shoulders, pulling me closer to him still, so my legs were falling into his lap. I opened my eyes and turned my head to look at his face. It seemed as though he was trying not to look at me, his curly hair masking half of his face. I didn't like that.
"Em, look at me."
I must have accidentally charmed him or something, because his face went blank, he nodded, and looked at me. I also felt as if I had just run a mile and a half as a human.
"Shit, I didn't mean to do that."
"No no," he assured me, "I needed that,"
He leaned in closer and kissed me, not like the times before, peaceful and soft, but more passionate and urgent. His free hand went to my waist, pulling me so that I was practically on his lap. My hands wrapped around his neck, locking my fingers together so he couldn't pull away. I was taking full advantage of my temporary newborn strength, and I think Emmett knew it.
Instead of trying to resist, he crashed his lips onto mine stronger than before, and my head felt like it was going to explode with happiness. If there was ever a moment where I doubted my feelings about Emmett, they were now obsolete. I was in love, and I knew it now. Nothing could change the way I felt when he looked at me, when our hands touched, when we kissed. He was my first love, and would forever be my last.
My life was then unimaginably perfect. For three minutes.
Then, we heard the engine of the Volvo. They were back.
I unlocked my fingers and tried to shift off of his lap, but he kept his hold on me.
"You idiot," I said, trying harder, although I wasn't really trying. "Did you not hear the engine? Judging by the speed that we drive at, they'll be here in like, thirty seconds."
"Yeah, is there a problem with the way were sitting?" he teased.
I looked at him plainly. "Edward can probably read our thoughts right now Emmett. I know your mind by now. Do you want him to know what you're thinking?"
"Shit, you're right."
He moved me off of his lap, and relocated to the opposite side of the couch. The sound of the engine cut off, and Alice and Jasper came in, followed by Carlisle and Esme, then Rosalie, and finally Edward, looking at us cheekily.
"Having fun?" he asked.
So he knows practically just as much as either of the people in our relationship. He knows that we went on a sate today, and my mind was full of the memories, so he knows what happened. My mind was also still filled up with the joy of making out with Emmett, so he knows about that too. Why did I get zero privacy? I realized this wasn't fair to anyone else in the family.
"Emmett, I need to talk to you in private please."
I took his hand and ran out the door.
"What, not tired yet?" he joked.
"Edward knows absolutely everything that happened between us," I explained, "It doesn't seem fair to everyone else in the family."
He was confused. "And you want to solve this by..."
"Figuring out what this is and then telling everybody so Edward isn't at an advantage."
"You really don't like Edward, do you?" He guessed.
"It's not that." I sighed, "I just don't think his gift should give him an advantage in our personal lives. If he gets to know everything, so does anyone else."
"Alright, so we're dating then." He concluded.
"Wait- What?"
It was his turn to explain now. "You wanted to figure out what we are, and I figured it out. We're dating."
Glee. Pure glee. It was all I could find in my mind. I nodded excitedly and we sped back in the house.
"Hey everyone," Emmett said, "We have an announcement."
"What's up?" Alice asked.
"Well," I started, "I don't like that Edward knows things you guys don't, and Alice probably knows a lot too." I turned to Emmett, "Can't Jasper sense emotions?" He nodded. "Right, so he knows a lot about it too, don't you?"
"Yes, and especially right now, you're particularly happy."
"Ok, shut up. Anyway we've decided to tell you everything." Emmett continued.
Rosalie rolled her eyes. "Spit it out already. You'll take our entire eternity."
I took a deep breath. "Emmett and I really like each other. While you were out, we went on a date, and we were just on the couch now hanging out together."
As much as I wanted them to know the truth, my cheeks would probably be flushing red by now if they could. Edward knew this already of course, and was trying to hold back laughter.
Emmett finished and described the rest for me. "We were kissing, and now we've just made it official. We're dating."
"Weren't you dating before?" Rosalie asked.
"We first talked to each other two days ago Rose, why would we be dating before now?"
Esme clapped her hands and practically squealed with excitement.
"Oh my gosh! Emmett dear, you've found your mate!"
Immediately Emmett and I stopped holding hands and took a step away from each other.
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Mrs. Cul- Esme." I said.
"I'm sorry, we're just all so excited, aren't we?" she looked at Carlisle, and he smiled warmly.
"Of course we are, but let's not annoy them, I'm sure they want to breath" he told her.
They went off into their own rooms, except for Edward, who went over to the beautiful black piano and started to try and learn the song blackbird, with Alice singing along.
