We made our way home, the silence not awkward, just there. Emmett held my hand, stroking the back of it with his thumb while we ran. It was a little unhelpful, but it was worth it. He started slowing down once we were near the river and, not wanting to leave him, I did so too.
"You're going to have to close your eyes again," He said, cringing back to avoid my gaze.
"I swear if I have to do this one more time..." I warned. He nodded vigorously and I closed my eyes, letting him cover my eyes with his hands and lead me towards our house.
As we got closer, I could hear music, and I realized it was the song blackbird played on the piano. It was dark out now, so I guessed Edward was playing it inside. It was really clear for a piano playing through a wall though.
"You know," I mentioned, "Just because I happened to be listening to the song the night I met you, doesn't mean it's the only song I listen to. I like other songs."
"Yeah, but Edward told me this is your favourite, so I always start with this one."
He was right, it was my favourite song. I sighed and continued to let him lead me over the river and out of the forest. When we were where I guessed was a hundred feet from our place, he removed his hands to let me see.
The sky was a cloudless purple, the stars shining so bright they almost blinded me. There were lanterns hanging from the house, illuminating the grass underneath, and Edward playing his piano, the door opened so we could hear him clearly. It looked like a party, minus the people, the food, the punch, the people who tried to sneak in booze - basically half of the things that made it a party, but it was still really beautiful and thoughtful of him.
I looked down and noticed that on the ground, there were hundred of small rubber things, wich I immediately recognized were condoms.
"Oh my god you fucking idiot, I can't believe you," I looked at him in disgust.
"I know, it's hilarious. Thank Rosalie for the idea and my idiocy for following through." I sighed and rubbed my temples, trying not to laugh so I could keep my stern look. "Hey, but look at what the condoms say,"
"What the fuck are you talking ab-" I was cut off by shock as I took in what I saw.
I knew I would've had to tell him tonight that he was my mate, but I wasn't prepared for this. The grass was coated with condoms forming the word MATE?. So he did like me. Like, like liked me. Like, loved me. We were mates. Both of us knew it, both of us wanted it. I looked at him, seeing his eyes sparkle.
"I really wish you didn't use condoms to say it," I joked, "But yeah, mates."
I grabbed his face and pulled it down to mine, kissing him passionately. Edward started to change the song, and Alice hummed along from inside the house. I knew the song, flightless bird, and I found the lyrics kind of wierd, but the melody was beautiful and the way Alice was singing made it so much better.
"It's funny because Edward didn't volunteer to play anything," Emmett said, "He was interested in learning modern day songs and he just happened to be playing when we came so Alice opened the door for us."
"That's sweet of her," I commented, resting my head on his chest.
"Well, Esme is a little over involved with the idea that I've finally found someone, and she's pressuring everyone else into helping us."
I snickered, wrapping my arms around his torso and swaying to the rhythm of the music.
"I love you," I whispered, closing my eyes.
He kissed my forehead and rested his head on mine. "I love you too,"
We danced the whole night, even after Edward got sick of playing piano for us.
