I place the mug down on the counter top and look at Ashton to take it. He hasn't even noticed. He's still trying to call Avery. I was trying to feel sorry for him but he didn't actually tell me what happened. Also I was worried about Luke. He left so abruptly and was clearly upset. I wanted to go after him but Ashton told me not to bother. We will call Michael in a little while to see how Luke is.
I just feel so bad. He is so scared and so alone. It's not fair for him to feel this way, or have this much pressure on him. I just wanted to help him somehow, but I can tell Ashton is pissed at me for having Luke over. It's not my fault I want to help my friend out.
"Dammit," Ashton says quickly placing his phone down on the counter top. He leans on his elbows and puts his head in his hands.
"Ash," I say timidly, going around him. "Can you tell me what happened now?" I wrap my arms around his waist and feel his sigh out.
"Just," he turns and hugs me back. "Avery."
"Yeah," I laugh slightly. "I got that part." I bite my lip and look up at him. "But what about Avery?"
"She..." Ashton shakes his head. "She wants me to keep Sophie for the rest of the month."
I smile up at him. "That's great."
Why didn't he seem more excited by this? Surely being allowed to keep Sophie for longer than what they originally agreed on would make Ashton excited, not sad. He seems sad, and a little bit annoyed.
"Is it?" Ashton grumbles, pulling away and walking out of the kitchen. He completely forgot about the coffee he asked me to make him. I roll my eyes and follow him out.
"Isn't it?" I say as he slumps down on the couch, rubbing his fingers to his temple.
"I don't know," Ashton shrugs. "Is it?"
"I'm guessing it isn't?" I sit down next to him and rub up and down his arm, trying to calm him a bit.
"No," Ashton shakes his head. "I love Sophie. I've literally known he for like ten days but I love her so much, but..." Ashton trails off. "I'm worried that..." Ashton struggles again.
"Ashton, what's wrong?" I can tell he is seriously starting to get upset.
"I'm worried Avery doesn't love her as much as I do." Ashton says slowly, looking at me out of the corner of his eye.
"What do you mean?" How could that be? What does that even mean? Of course Avery loves Sophie. She's her mum. She has to love her.
"Like," Ashton sighs. "She doesn't seem to care that she hasn't seen Sophie for a really long time now. She doesn't seem to mind when I asked if I could keep Sophie for longer, she didn't care when I wanted to change her name," Which he still hasn't done. "And just in general."
I think about Avery for a while. I don't know much about her. Only the stuff Ashton tells me. To be honest, I don't really have much of a problem with her but I guess I can see were Ashton is coming from. She has seemed very... uninterested in the fact that her baby is living with technically two complete strangers. She also had no idea who Ashton was or what he was really like before just leaving Sophie with him. Maybe he has a bigger point than I thought.
"Um..." How am I supposed to respond? "Yeah... I guess." I say slowly and hesitantly.
"You guess?" Ashton repeats. "You guess?" His voice rises a little bit and I just roll my eyes.
"Ashton..."
"Avery doesn't care." Ashton stands up from the couch. "She doesn't care at the fact her daughter is living with me and she doesn't ask for updates or for me to call her. She doesn't ask to ever see Sophie even facetime or skype. Sophie has been here for a while now and hasn't seen her mum since she dropped her off with me, ever so carelessly." Ashton runs his hands through his hair in frustration. "It's clear to me that Avery doesn't love her." Ashton shakes his head. "Why isn't it clear to you?"
