All I can do is watch.
Ashton was outside the far too bright and cheery hospital room. I could see him through the glass window in the hall scrolling through his phone and every now and then pressing it up to his ear to either receive a call or make one. I wanted to go to him. I wanted to hug him, kiss him, do anything that would make him feel better but I just... I couldn't. He needed to be alone, but he needed me here. I know it might seem hard to understand but I get it. I get why he feels like that.
I tear my eyes away from Ashton when he presses the phone to his ear again, beginning to pace. My eyes settle on at the little bundle of covers in the cot before me. They were rising steadily now, Sophie sleeping soundly underneath them all. I was afraid to look into the cot. Worried I would hear her cries, wheezes or nothing at all. We- I mean Ashton was so close to loosing her.
Asthma attack. We were told this as soon as we got into the paediatrics ward last night. I just nodded and Ashton did all the speaking. He was asking how he didn't know. Then he was told that even the hospital knew she was asthmatic. Ashton then went crazy, telling me how Avery never told him. I've never seen him that angry before, his face went red and he couldn't fully form a sentence. I knew then as well not to go near him. He just wanted to see his baby and kill Avery.
It was about ten minutes ago he realized what had actually happened. Ashton was just sitting in the chair next to me, hand tightly grasping mine when I heard him gasp. I looked over and he just stormed out of the room, not even catching my eyes. I knew tears were forming in his though. So now we are here. Ashton is outside on the phone to who knows who, trying find Avery and keeping me in the dark about whatever he was gasping about.
We get to take Sophie home today though. Nearly three days later. What's even worse is the engagement part for Michael and Bella is supposed to be on Saturday but no one actually seems to care. Michael and Bella have been fighting, Luke has went MIA again but for real this time, Calum doesn't speak to anyone, Becca has still not said whether she is going or not and Ashton and I have a lot going on right now. Clearly.
The door creaks open again, Ashton peering into the room before entering it. I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't see him come off the phone. I look up, a hopeful smile on my face, praying Ashton has found out whatever he needed to but instead he just shakes his head.
"What happened?" I ask him quietly.
Ashton walks over, shoulder slumped. He stops at Sophie's hospital cot for a moment, gazing down at his daughter. I could see the corner of his lips tugging up the tiniest amount but not enough to be called a smile. Ashton takes a seat next to me before talking.
"I found her sister's Instagram." Ashton sighs out.
"Wait what?" I feel my eyes widen. "Are you serious?"
"Uh-huh." Ashton nods. "Her name is Marnie and sadly I am just waiting for my follow request to be approved."
"How did you find Avery's sister?" I ask him, still feeling a bit shocked.
"I called up my old friend Warren, from my art history class," Ashton recalls. "He knew a guy, who is the brother of the guy who owns the bar I guessed I met Avery in." He slowly finds my hand as he talks. "I asked him if he remembers me and a blonde chick from that night. I was then told that he had no idea who I was and that a lot of blondes come to his bar." Ashton rolls his eyes. "I then told him her name and he kinda went, "Oh fuck you mean Avery Talbot?" So he clearly knew her well." Ashton sighs. "He then put me in touch with a girl that used to be friends with Avery and then lost contact with her when she got pregnant. Turns out though she still follows Avery's ex on Instagram. I went on to his to find that every photo with Avery and him had been deleted but he had a photo with Avery's sister and that's how I ended up finding her." He concludes. "If her Instagram wasn't on private I wouldn't even bother following her."
