Well everyone, Blazing Avalanche is now over, but the Frozen Fire series isn't. Stay tuned for more information on the fourth book that I intend to share when the time is right. But for now, enjoy the epilogue to Blazing Avalanche "Inheritance and the Road of Corpses".
Odin's breath hitched in his throat as the blade from Ruben's knife began to dig further into his neck, cutting through flesh and fur alike with horrifying ease, the weapon getting stained with his blood as, in this moment of panic, and as Odin's mind thought of his sister, Coco, and how she lives in Adventure City too. Ever since their parents were killed while responding to a hostage situation, Odin took charge of providing for himself and Coco until he decided to join the force as well, determined to avenge the deaths of his parents; no matter what.
The air in the small living room hung heavy with a suffocating mixture of fear and anticipation. Odín and Coco sat rigidly on the frayed couch, their hearts pounding in their chests, a looming dread casting an eerie pallor over the room. Their eyes were locked on the entrance, the doorway through which their parents, Onyx and Luna, should have walked in by now. But time stretched mercilessly, punctuated only by the distant wails of sirens that seemed to mirror the frantic rhythm of their hearts.
The fireplace crackled intermittently, casting erratic shadows that danced ominously on the walls, as if foretelling the turmoil that was about to unfold. Odín's paw clenched Coco's tightly, their intertwined paws a fragile lifeline in the sea of uncertainty. Their anticipation had transformed into a gnawing fear, the kind that settles deep in the pit of your stomach, refusing to be ignored.
A creak broke the stillness, causing both of them to jolt upright. The door swung open, and for an agonizing moment, hope surged within them. But it wasn't the familiar forms of Onyx and Luna that materialized in the doorway – it was Chief Anderson, his face etched with a sorrow that reached far beyond words.
Coco's grip on Odín's paw turned vice-like, her voice trembling as she tried to summon a semblance of normalcy. "Chief Anderson, where are our parents? Are they... are they okay?"
Chief Anderson's eyes, usually a bastion of authority, now mirrored a profound sorrow that seemed to pierce their souls. He hesitated, a heavy sigh escaping his lips before he finally spoke, his voice threaded with grief. "I'm afraid not, Odín, Coco. The mission they were on... it went terribly wrong. I'm so sorry to tell you this, but... they didn't make it."
The world around them seemed to waver, the walls of the room closing in as their reality shattered into a million shards. Odín's heart thundered in his chest, a sense of disbelief warring with the crushing weight of truth. Coco's eyes welled up with tears, her voice breaking as she clung to Odín's paw as if it were her last anchor.
"What do you mean, Chief? Are you saying... they're not coming back?" Coco's words trembled, mirroring the fragility of her heart.
Chief Anderson's gaze was heavy as he confirmed the nightmare they feared. "I wish it weren't true, but they won't be returning, Odín, Coco. Onyx and Luna... they were caught in a violent confrontation during their mission. They fought valiantly, but... they didn't survive."
Time seemed to suspend, the room a vacuum of pain as Chief Anderson's words reverberated in the air. Odín's throat tightened, his breath coming in shaky gasps, each inhale a reminder of the crushing grief that threatened to consume him. Coco's tears flowed freely now, her chest heaving with the weight of a grief too immense to bear.
