I look around at the small group of dead Saviors on the ground as the walkers they were using to make a roadblock snarl and try to move, but can't thanks to the chains keeping them in place. "Morgan? Are you with us?" Jesus asks and I turn to see him with his hand on Morgan's shoulder.
By the look in the man's eyes I can tell that he's not exactly playing with a full deck if you catch my drift. Poor Morgan. Before all this he was basically a pacifist. Never killed anyone and always used his stick to deter them. Now he's starting to lose his grip, kind of like Carol when we first took on the Saviors and believed it was a small group.
All this killing isn't good for any deceit human being. Even I some times have troubling dealing with it. That's why I focus on my kids and tell myself I'm making this world safer for them. Speaking of which, Kara is back at Hilltop with Tara, just in case the Saviors come back. "Good people, I found something on our quarry," Ezekiel calls out and we head over to him.
"What is it?" Michonne asks him as he unfolds a map. "A list and another map. And what appear to be other facts." Rick takes it and brings it closer, reading it. "They're lining up Saviors on the Old Mill Road. That's where Negan will be."
"We have to get to Negan before they figured out what happened here," Carol says and Rick grabs his walkie. "Maggie."
"I'm here."
"It's time. It was a trap. So we're changing the plan." We start making our way towards Old Mill Road and I'm walking beside Jesus who sparks up a conversation with Morgan about how he deals with the Saviors. "You want to keep these people safe, and you think you need to kill other people to do that. That's not exactly safe for you, which ultimately may not be safe for the people you're trying to keep safe."
"Was that a paradox?" I ask teasingly and Jesus chuckles. "It's a conundrum. Or it's not." A steady breeze is blowing through as we move and so I pull strands of hair out of my face, tucking them behind my ear so they stay put. "But you can stop people without killing them. I mean, you almost stopped me. I have a simple proposal. Something to try."
He lifts up Morgan's stick as he walks and gestures to the sharpened bloodstained end. "This end for the dead," and then points to the blunt end, "and this end for the living. And things will get better." Jesus moves up and Carol replaces him with a smile on her face. "Jesus. I'm starting to like that guy."
Suddenly, the group stops moving and I see heads turning to the left. "Oh, jesus," Michonne exclaims quietly and I look over. My eyes widen when I see movement in the distance and realize it's a giant herd. "Holy damn. You ever seen one that big?" Jerry asks and Rick shakes his head. "No. Things are changing. Let's go."
The group starts moving again and I hear Daryl from behind me, "How much further?"
"We grow closer. Yonder, over the ridge." I chuckle and smile at the strange way King Ezekiel speaks, but then again it's kind of refreshing. A hand grabs mine and I'm being gently pulled back until I'm at Daryl's side. "Stay close. Kay?" I nod and glance at him as we move.
"I'm not going anywhere," I say and he nods. "Damn straight." I smile and give him a quick peck on the cheek. The ghost of a smile appears on his face and we follow the others side by side, making our way to the front of the group with Rick, Carol, Michonne, Maggie, Rosita, and Jesus.
When we get close to the ridge the woods come alive with the sound of whistling and we stop, raising our guns up, sweeping our surroundings. "Well, damn, Rick, look at that." Negan's voice is amplified making it sound louder than usual. "Pegged again. Pegged so very hard. I ambushed your ambush with an even bigger ambush."
