Wei Wuxian, a young boy around the age of five years old hides so many secrets underneath such a warm smile he wears every day. Underneath the secret smile is a promise. A promise he made to his mother that he would always smile. He promised that he would not cry, and to only cry in front of family. That promise he made to keep smiling, he holds dearly, as it was the last conversation he remembered with his mother before she left. Wuxian is now cold, and alone, wandering the streets of Yiling in hopes to fine warmth, shelter, food...anything that will keep him going.
He was sad that he was alone, and he was always on edge when wandering the streets, fearing for vicious stray dogs to chase after him for the scraps of salvaged food that he had. The food that had the dogs and Wuxian fight for almost daily. Even though he was hurting from the bite marks, the pain of hunger in his stomach, and an aching mournful heart for his parents death, he still wore a smile. He smiled because he knows it is a beautiful smile. His smile could warm anyone's heart if they looked his way.
It was a cold winter day and Wuxian is desperate to find warmth, even if it's just for a moment. As he neared the end of the town of Yiling, a woman wearing a black and red gown and a warm thick black shawl, looked to be in her mid thirties or so, stood in-front of the little boy. The woman scanned the ragged and tattered clothes, bite wounds, and fifth that covered the boy. Her eyes showed relief and pity. She had found her grandson.
"A'Ying?" The woman spoke softly. Wuxian looked up to scan the woman's face. He couldn't help but smile at her. Of course, he would smile, even living and begging on the streets, he continued to smile. He didn't know this woman, but she seemed welcoming, and she spoke his formal name. A name usually only said by family.
"H-h-hello," Wuxian greeted, through a shivering forced smile, "w-who a-r-r-are you?"
The woman knelt down so she was face to face with the boy, "I am your Grandmother, Baoshan Sanran," She stated as she removed her shall and wrapped it around Wuxian, "Hearing that your parents are gone, I rushed to Yiling and I came to find you to take you home with me. I'm sorry it took me a while to find you."
Wuxian's smile grew bigger, "It's okay," he said as Baoshan picked him up.
"Let's get you home to clean you up, it's not far," Baoshan said and carried him back to her abode located in a sacred mountain hidden just beyond Yiling.
As she wandered close to the mountain, there was a large patch of trees at the bottom. The trees shifted a bit as Baoshan pressed forward. As she continued forward, the trees went back to their normal spot as they passed, as if they never moved. Soon, she then ventured into a peach blossom forest. She has quite a journey back as Wei Wuxian told her about his ventures and experiences on the street.
Once they reached the entrance to her home, the first thing she did was bathe Wuxian, and gave him a well deserved nutritious meal to help gain his health. As he ate, Wuxian allowed Boashan to attend to his wounds. Despite the pain of disinfecting, applying ointment, and dressing his wounds, he did not flinch or cry of pain. He cooperated with her without any complaints.
Baoshan couldn't help but wonder why, as Wuxian was just a small boy. If he was in pain, he should say so, not hide it. So she asked, "Are you in pain?"
Wuxian glanced at her still with a small smile on his face, "A little, but I can handle it. I promised Mom to always smile, and only cry in front of family."
Baoshan was a bit taken back by that promise he made. She sighed and gave him a gentle smile, "it's always good to smile, but just know, I am your family. If you need to cry, cry for me. I will be there to comfort you. If you need to talk, come to me. Can you do that?"
Wei Wuxian nodded, still smiling and answered, "Yes."
"Alright then, finish eating and then I'll take you to your room so you can get some proper sleep," she said.
"Okay," Wuxian felt good to have something to eat. It's been days since he ate anything. Once he was full, he helped clean up after his meal and followed his grandmother to his new room, "can I call you Grandma or do you want me to call you by your name?"
Baoshan nodded and replied, "You can call me Grandmother, Bao Bao, Baoshan, whatever you are comfortable with."
Baoshan sat on the bed beside Wuxian for a bit to tuck him in, "My parents were cultivators, is that true? Can I do that too?"
Boashan's face lit up with joy, "it's been a while since I took in a disciple, I would love to help you. Since you are at the right age to form a *golden core, we can get you started on that soon. But I want you to rest and let your wounds heal for a few days before we start."
"Okay," Wuxian said happily.
Boashan stayed until Wuxian was asleep before leaving his room. She then started to plan Wei Wuxian's training for after he heals.

*Golden Core - is a core in the body of cultivators. Golden cores can store and control spiritual energy. The core forms after a certain point of cultivation, by using the body as a crucible to cultivate the core. After the formation of their golden core, the cultivator's level increases at a rapid speed; without a golden core, a cultivator can only be a low-end cultivator. Golden cores are depicted as golden balls that emit wispy light. They are located under the solar-plexus bone in one's chest- - - - - - - - - -
