Wangji sat comfortably at his desk in the library as he read the scripture in his hand, and occasionally took a peek over at Wuxian. Although to a point, Wangji could understand why Grandmaster Lan had punished Wuxian, but at the same time, Wangji felt it was not necessary to punish Wuxian for his bravery to stick up for he (Gusu) clan. To Wangji, he would have had Wuxian kneel and reflect for a couple hours instead of copying rules, but he had no choice but to follow his uncle's orders. Although he wished his brother spoke up more, as he was the clan leader, due to all the responsibilities on his shoulders, punishments were often carried out by Grandmaster Lan or Wangji.
With a sigh, Wangji felt a little defeated. He was also concerned about himself. Why was he suddenly getting soft over a person he just met not long ago? Was it because Wuxian trusted him enough to tell him all about his fear of dogs, and his parents horrible death? If he gained Wuxian's trust so quickly, he was wondering if that was a good thing or a bad thing. As he was lost in thought, he felt a presence suddenly very close to him. Coming out of his train of thought, he looked to his right only to see Wuxian comfortably kneeling beside his desk staring at Wangji. Wangji could feel his ears heat up a bit as a rush of shyness passed through him.
'What does he want? How long has he been there? Why am I shy all of a sudden?' Wangji asked himself in his mind, 'keep your composure and don't let him see you flustered.'
"What are you doing over here?" Wangji asked, coming back to his senses, "go finish your copies. Sooner it is done, the sooner you are free to do what you want."
"Do what I want? Here? At Cloud Recesses?" Wuxian asked, "if I could do what I want I'd immediately go to Caiyi Town and get a couple jars of Emperor's Smile. But I can't, so I can't do what I want. I am restricted to your laws."
"Maybe you will get used to it," Wangji assured him.
"Says the person who has lived with them since the day of his birth," Wuxian stated, "you are so bound by rules I'm sure you don't know what it's like to really have fun and relax."
Wangji was now starting to get a bit annoyed, "people have different definitions of the word fun. For example, you have fun by drinking and flirting with everyone you see, but for me, I find reading scriptures, meditation, and cultivating fun."
Wuxian looked at Wangji with his mouth slightly gaped open. He was appalled that someone would straight out accuse him of flirting. Yes he has flirted with girls, but not as much as people seem to think. Wuxian has heard rumors of himself being a womanizer and liked to hang out with them at brothels.
"What makes you think I flirt with just anyone?" Wuxian asked, now getting angry and started raising his voice, "what ever rumors you have heard about me you think are true right?"
Wangji looked up from his book and at Wuxian. He could see tears starting to form in Wuxian's eyes. Wangji's heart sank a little at the sight.
"Wei Ying, I-"
"No," Wuxian interrupted flustered and stood up, "for your information I may have flirted occasionally with a girl here and there but never have I been to a brothel. Never once has I touched a woman or man, for that matter. Not even inappropriately. I have never kissed anyone, I have never slept with anyone. I'm just a person who has one living relative left and it seems to be that she is the only person who understands!"
Wangji had never had someone yell at him in such a way. Sure he was yelled at by his uncle, and some of the other elders within the sect, but never to this extent.
"And here I was just trying to make a nice conversation with you," Wuxian stated, "I really thought you were different. Turns out, my grandmother was right, people from the other sects and clans are a bunch of useless fools!"
"Wei Wuxian!" Wangji yelled standing up, "you are now getting out of line, I am sorry I upset you. That was not my intention."
"Well to bad," Wuxian said, grabbing Suibian and Chenqing and stormed out of the library. As he left, he was so flustered that he wasn't paying attention and ran right into Zewu Jun.
"Young Master Wei?" Zewu Jun was slightly surprised as he could see Wuxian was angry with tears streaming down his face.
"Sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going," Wuxian answered with a bow in apology.
"It's alright," he said, "what's wrong? You seem upset? Would you like to talk?"
Wuxian shook his head and huffed, "why don't you ask your brother."
That was all Wuxian could say and walked away before he could say or do anything he would regret. Zewu Jun stood there puzzled as he watched Wuxian storm off. He sighed and entered the library only to see his brother in tears. Zewu Jun was suddenly taken back by the sight. The last time he saw his little brother cry or show any emotion was when their mother passed away. Seeing his brother like this, he knew that he and Wuxian had a misunderstanding and Wangji needed his brother by his side at the moment.
"Wangji?" Xichen called out as he approached his little brother.
Wangji looked up at his brother and he actually let more tears fall, "Xiongzhang*, I am sorry," was all he could say.
Xichen knelt beside Wangji and placed his hand on his little brother's back. He started to try to comfort Wangji. It had been a long time since he had tried to comfort his little brother in such a way. And to his surprise, Wangji even moved into his brother's comfort for a hug.
"What happened?" Xichen asked as he held his brother.
"I accidentally upset Wei Ying and he yelled at me. No one has ever yelled at me like the way he yelled at me," Wangji confessed, "he was trying to work up a conversation with me but I didn't listen and told him to go finish copying. He said he just wanted to talk for a bit before he went back. He was talking about wanting to do something fun but I spoke out of line."
That was the most Xichen had ever heard his little brother speak to him. But he was glad Wangji was opening up to him.
"What did you say?" Xichen asked.
"I told him our versions of fun were different from each other," Wangji said, "saying that he has fun by drinking and flirting with everyone he sees, while I like reading scriptures and books."
Xichen closed his eyes trying to process the information he was given. He wasn't mad or upset, if anything he was just disappointed and concerned. He knew that Wuxian had those type of rumors going on about him but didn't let it get to Him. He felt those were false rumors. He thought maybe Wangji thought that as well. Maybe he did but spoke it out of annoyance or without thinking.
"Wangji," Xichen said softly, "I'm sorry Young Master Wei snapped at you the way he did. He could have been a bit more calm trying to reason with you. And I know you are hurting right now. Since you both room together I hope you both can find common ground. It was a misunderstanding on both sides but I also want to say, you should be careful about your words. As I am sure, Young Master Wei is hurting as well."
All Wangji did was nod.
"For the meantime, try to calm yourself down, so you can try to find a way to speak with him. I hope you two make amends because I actually think you two could be good friends if you work things out. If you have further issues, I am willing to sit down with both of you so you can talk," Xichen said.
"If it's okay, maybe you should be there," Wangji said nervously, "I trust I'll be fine but I just feel more content having a third party."
Xichen nodded, "I will get Wei Gongzi to meet later this evening so you can sort it out. I would hate for you both to be uncomfortable if you waited a day. Especially when you both room together."
Wangji nodded with a sigh. Xichen stayed with his brother until he was calm enough to cope on his own. He then left to find Wuxian so he could have him sit down and talk.
