Lan Wangji sat there in the lecture hall listening to his uncle verbally giving Wei Wuxian a pop quiz in front of everyone. He was a bit shocked at how his uncle kept asking question after question to Wuxian. He had never seen his uncle be this aggressive in terms of quizzing a student. He wondered why his uncle had to pick Wuxian out over every person in the room. He was internally berating Qiren as he continued to question Wuxian.

What shocked Wangji even more though, was just how smart Wei Wuxian was. He answered each question correctly and comely without sounding arrogant. Wangji admired Wuxian from a distance. When his uncle asked about the execution and what methods to use, Wuxian answered perfectly. Wangji was internally smiling. After his uncle dismissed everyone early, Wangji stayed back to question his uncle for his behavior toward Wuxian. His brother was also still in the room. Xichen could guess the question that Wangji had so he spoke for Wangji first.

"Uncle, I know you have been thorough and strict with Wangji and me as we grew up, but why did you personally pick Wuxian and only question him?"

"I was curious about the brain of Baoshan's disciple," Qiren answered Xichen.

"Why Wei Ying?" Wangji asked but he was looking for the real reason. His uncle answered partially but it didn't seem to be the whole story.

"Like I said, I wanted to test his knowledge," Qiren stated firmly.

"Okay then why only Wei Gongzi? You only asked him questions. There were other students, if you wanted to quiz them, then have them take a written quiz. I feel you just broke a clan rule by picking on the boy," Xichen said. Xichen for some reason became more authoritative when he interrogated his uncle.

Qiren let out a sigh, "His parents were smart. His mother was mischievous-"

"His parents?" Xichen interrupted, "is it because you still hold a grudge towards his parents that you decided to aim for their son?"

"I don't have to answer to either of you, I am your elder and you both can leave," Qiren demanded. Xichen and Wangji were a bit taken back by his words.

"Uncle, I hope you have a change of heart to Wei Ying," Wangji stated, "I am still questioning how but I managed to unsheathe his sword."

Xichen looked at Wangji with a questionable look, "what do you mean?"

"His sword has a spirit and only allows Wei Ying to unsheathe it," Wangji answered, "why can I unsheathe it if it locks for others?" Qiren and Xichen looked at Wangji. Qiren looked like his face turned a couple shades of red and Xichen could only smile as they heard what Wangji said.

"I will take my leave first," Wangji said bowing to his brother and uncle and left the lecture hall.

Wangji needed a moment to ease himself before heading back to the Jingshi. He had a feeling that was where Wuxian went. He wanted to speak with him and make sure he was okay. So, on his way back to his place, he took the longer route so he could clear his thoughts before meeting Wuxian.

When Wangji entered his house after a good walk, he immediately scanned the space for Wuxian. He was sleeping. Wangji felt his mouth curve upward slightly as he admired the beauty of Wuxian as he slept. Halfway to his table he heard a knock and turned back to the door.

"Wangji," his brother said after opening the door. Wangji gestured his brother to come inside only for him to also spot Wuxian napping over on his bed. Xichen smiled and moved over to the table to speak with his brother.

"I have water heating up for tea," Wangji said to his brother. He made sure to speak in a quieter voice so he did not wake Wei Ying.

Xichen nodded, "how are you? I wanted to make sure you were okay after you left the lecture hall."
