Thestrals.
I had never known they existed, but Luna had given me a quick lesson on them as we rode to the Ministry.
I had never seen them before because I had never seen anyone die until Cedric. They were magnificent creatures though. They reminded me of Severus.
I stood in the elevator, in the front next to Harry. I felt responsible for the entire group. I was the only adult here and anything that happened to any of them would fall on me.
"Department of Mysetries." An automated voice said as the lift stopped, and the door opened. We all exited and looked ahead.
"This is it." Harry said.
We walked further to the room, and the door made an awful groaning sound as it closed.
Harry started walking forwards, saying the shelf numbers out lud as he walked, nearly ran. He stopped at ninety-seven and looked around.
"He should be here." Harry said, seeming worried.
"Harry," Neville said, pulling my attention. He was looking up at a shelf. "This ones got your name on it."
Harry came over and took the prophecy off the shelf. It started reciting itself to Harry, I could hardly hear or understand it though, that's when I realized... Sirius was in no danger. He wasn't even here.
This was a setup so that Harry could retrieve the prophecy.
"Harry." Hermione said, looking ahead. I turned to see what she was looking at and saw a Death Eater in front of us, it was walking towards us.
Harry pushed to the front of the group, but I stepped forwards, using my arm to tuck Harry behind me, so that I was in front.
"Where's Sirius?" Harry asked it.
"You know, you really should learn to tell the difference between dreams," It took out its wand from it's cane as it spoke. I realized before he had even taken off the mask that it was Lucius. "And reality. You saw only what the dark lord wanted you to see. Now, hand me the prophecy."
"You do anything to us, I'll break it." Harry said.
I looked at Lucius, feeling unease. If Voldemort didn't know I was still alive before, if Lucius got away, he would then, and I didn't know what I'd face if that were the case.
"Hahaha!" I heard a cackle from ahead. My aunt emerged from the shadows. "He knows how to play! Itty, bitty, baby, Potter."
"Bellatrix Lestrange..." Neville said, sounding shaken.
"Neville Longbottom is it? How's mum and dad?" She asked, teasing the boy as she approached Lucius' side.
I had heard of what she did to his parents, I understood the tension as soon as she teased him.
"Better now that they're about to be avenged," Neville said, he raised his wand and Harry put his arm out to stop him. Bellatrix raised her own wand and Lucius raised his hands, trying to intervene.
"Now let's everybody just calm down, shall we? All we want is that prophecy." Lucius spoke.
"Why did Voldemort need me to come and get this?" Harry asked. I admired his bravery and confidence in the situation.
"You dare speak his name... You filthy half-blood!" Bellatrix shouted.
"It's all right. He's just a curious lad, aren't you?" Lucius said. His calm demeanor and his seeming need to keep everything peaceful portrayed to me something I didn;t entirely expect from him. "Prophecies can only be retrieved by about whom they are made."
I looked to the sides, and noticed at about the same time as everyone else that we were being surrounded. Two on each side, however there were three in the back.
"Which is lucky for you, really." Lucius continued. "Haven't you always wondered what was the reason for the connection between you and the Dark Lord?" He inched his way towards us and Bella followed. "Why he was unable to kill you when you were just an infant? Don't you want to know the secret of your scar? All the answers are there, Potter, in your hand. All you have to do is give it to me." Lucius held out his hand after his little monologue.
"I've waited fourteen years." Harry said.
"I know," Lucius said with fake sympathy. As everyone had picked a direction to face, I trained my wand on Bellatrix. She seemed more concerned with the Prophecy to notice.
"Guess I can wait a little longer... Now!" Harry said. That was our signal.
I turned and fired a spell at the death eaters who were behind us, seeing that Harry and Neville were focused on the two in front.
We all turned to run, having stupefied the Death Eaters. Lucius cut us off, though at our turn, and the group quickly got split trying to find a way out.
"Y/n" I heard someone whisper as I picked a direction. I looked around to find nothing. I heard it once more and looked to the shelf in front of me. My name was on it. It was glowing. It was a prophecy. If this was important it may be my only chance to grab it. It was so small too, not much larger than a tennis ball.
I took it.
"Glad to see you found that." A voice said from behind me. I hadn't heard that vice in years.
I turned to see my father, maskless and very clearly a Death Eater. Ah, it all made sense now. No time for a confrontation.
"Father," I acknowledged, before firing a spell at him, not muttering the incantation. It worked because he didn't have time to respond.
I ran back and clashed with Luna and Neville. The group had all convened in one area once more. Besides the blood on Luna's face, everyone seemed alright.
A cloud of smoke started barrelling toward us. Ginny, who was the closest, used the reducto spell, and it was quite powerful as well. The Death Eater was sent flying back.
Prophesies started dropping from the shelves, the shelves began swaying. The rain of breaking glass balls was heading straight for us. I pulled Ginny back.
"Get to the door!" I yelled, as the lot of us turned and started to run.
Harry led the way back as I tailed the group. I could feel glass shards hitting my legs as I ran, but nothing stabbed me.
I entered the door, and as soon as I stepped, I started falling down, as did everyone else. We stopped just before we made impact with the rock below us, and then we were dropped onto our stomachs.
