Sitting at lunch was supposed to be my only moment of liberating freedom from feeling like I was five inches small beside those two, feeling giddy and nervous and overthinking fucking everything.
And maybe it would have been the case if I didn't end up sitting with Callen and Amir together at the table with me.
They were in the same year together and like previously mentioned Amir's friends were friends with Callen so it wasn't the most bizarre occurrence, hell hadn't frozen over or anything, but it just seemed so unfortunate that while everyone chatted back and forth I felt like burying my face in between the two slices of bread that kept the ham inside my sandwich.
Amir looked almost as awkward as I did but he kept up the conversation with his friends over the game I was into, but the way they talked about it was so painfully nerdy I couldn't even reply at risk of being dragged into a debate over whether mana farming or XP farming was a more useful waste of your time.
Like hell, I just played the game and watched my Bull Hellion's horns rip people's insides to shreds, who played squarely for tactic?
Callen sat there like a mouse thinking if they are still and quiet enough then everyone will simply forget they exist directly in front of them. And I didn't blame them.
I didn't know how their friends failed to notice the sheer awkwardness between the three of us that was just about giving me a rash.
And I was already on edge knowing I'd have to take Gift with me to school the next day and show him around without being seen by him. My only saving grace was that Gift would insist on coming in early enough that even Jacob wouldn't feel compelled to attend.
Actually all of them left around the same time and Callen looked like he desperately wanted to follow them but he hadn't taken more than a bite from his spaghetti and meatballs and looked like hew as regretting that.
He stuffed a mouthful in his mouth and looked down at his tray while Amir looked back and forth between me and him like. 'Oh man, this is awkward.' But he didn't know the half of it.
"How... How's your day been?" I asked Callen, Amir frowning at me as I played nice with the guy.
He coughed a little through his food. "Good, fine."
"Uh, sorry about the picture man." Amir tried sheepishly.
The mention of it put me on edge, but what was he supposed to say. I was pretty sure the last time they met Amir had his phone trained on us after the accidental kiss before his lungs seemed ready to collapse from excessive, gratuitous laughing.
Callen looked up and turned a little red at the mention of it. "Shut up. Don't say anything about that." He muttered, looking around the room.
Atlas and Jacob were sitting at their respective tables but like all of us were a little extra aware of the possibility of them really noticing us. After the whole photo situation, which, I mean it was mostly my fault, if I hadn't traded my blackmail card for one glorious moment of revenge it probably would have gone relatively smoothly, but since then both Amir and Callen were a little paranoid around them and Atlas and Jacob did occasionally watch them in a way that made me nervous.
"It's not like they have super hearing." Amir grumbled.
"You don't know that!"
"You don't know that." I nodded in agreement, glancing back at them one by one warily. Neither were watching, Atlas had his back to us and was flicking something at one of his friends, snickering, and Jacob was diligently eating with the kind of perfect posture that convinced me he was half robot.
