"Are you hiding from them now too?" Amir asked, sneaking up on me from where I was hiding behind the pillar the next day, watching the flock move through the halls including Jacob and Atlas trailing behind with his friends heading for lunch.
I shoved him away. "I'm not hiding. Go away or they'll see me!"
He frowned at me, walking back up to me. "Those definitely sound like the words of a man who's not hiding. What did you do this time?"
I glared at him, looked back and saw Jacob turn in my direction without spotting me, but it was enough to give my heart a shock and I crouched fast.
"I didn't do anything."
"You say that a lot."
"When!"
"Didn't do anything... wasn't my fault..." He mimicked me using the same intonation, a sort of nervous but full of conviction tone I used, annoying to hear it from someone else, even more annoying that I could recognise it.
I fixed a pissed off expression on him.
Then the moment they headed inside I moved. "Move, move." I struggled to get around him.
Amir followed. "Are we cosplaying as soldiers?"
I rolled my eyes. "Yes. We are." I made finger guns and pulled the imaginary trigger back at him as I walked as fast as I could through a crowd moving in the opposite direction. "Bam, play dead."
He sucked his teeth as he tried to keep up, "You do that in front of a teacher she'll call the police." Hu muttered after me, then grabbed my arm from behind. "Slow down!"
"Grow longer legs!" I argued.
He raised his hands like I was incorrigible. "Look if you're trying to hide from them we can hide together."
I frowned, scratching the back of my head and glancing back down the hall. "I'm not sure..."
"What is going on with you, you on drugs or something?"
I was about to reply when Gift stepped up in front of us and I nearly jumped up out of my skin and took a walk.
"Hey- Heyy..." I smiled at him.
"Why are you always late?"
"Holy shit," Amir mumbled.
"Long queue." I hurriedly answered, holding up my sandwich, still in it's triangular box with its little window to show me just how good it looks after being juggled by every previous owner.
"Then you must text me." He argued.
"Gift..." I turned and saw Amir staring at me. "What?" I groaned.
"You have a third boyfri-"
Only he cut himself off when I slapped my hands over his mouth and his words reduced into something more like "Ammamd..."
Then he looked genuinely worried.
"Shut up! He's my cousin. And he won't understand the joke." I whispered before letting go of him just as he was about to stick his tongue out.
"You have a cousin?"
"You don't?"
He shrugged. "He's a different shade from you." He pointed out.
Gift frowned at him. "That's because we have different skin." He turned to me accusingly. "Who is this?"
"My friend."
