Lesego was falling behind, and I could tell she was having second thoughts.
Tommy had managed to track down Zack's prison, and it happened that one of our mutual friends was working at the same prison.
I didn't want to bring her here because I knew her wounds were still too fresh, but we had to start somewhere. I had the feeling that there was a chance that Zack knew about Karabelo. The way he wormed his way into Lesego's life a few years ago was just suspicious, there were so many mysteries around his life, at some point I even thought he was going to hurt Lesego.
And then there was his arrest and his rape scandal. It was true, he never raped the girl, as a matter of fact, he was framed.
Yep, I said it. The son of a mockery was innocent, and it was his innocence that scared me.
Lesego didn't know yet, but I knew it was going to make her happy. I didn't want her to find out just yet, because knowing her, she would derail from our mission and try to save his ass instead of taking care of the imposter.
Yes, he was innocent of the rape, but was he innocent of bringing chaos in Lesego's life? If he was that innocent, who in their right state of mind, who in this world would want to frame Zachary Normans? That question was answered when a voice came from around the corner.
My heart stilled as I turned to look at Lesego, she looked like she was going to collapse.
I quietly rushed to her and pulled her against my chest before she could hit the ground.
"Lesego, pull yourself together, you'll put yourself in danger," I said in a hush whisper.
She nodded her head and tried standing up straight. "Come on." I nudged her, but she remained rooted in her spot as if scared to take the next step forward. "Lesego." She quickly followed me as I led her behind a police truck where we would be hidden from sight.
Dammit! I texted Abigail earlier and told her to keep an eye on Karabelo, why the hell didn't she warn me?
I knew Lesego was not prepared to see Karabelo yet. I could only imagine how she must have felt when she heard her voice for the first time.
She sounded exactly like Lesego, just a lot colder and more outspoken.
We leaned behind the truck, and I spied on our intruders while Lesego opted to sit down with her back against the truck tyre, she looked like she was going to get sick.
I couldn't believe this! Had Karabelo been meeting with Zack all this time while she pretended not to want to see him?
I knew she was here to see him because Daniels did not work in this station.
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't just kill you," her cold voice rang throughout the parking lot, and I felt Lesego tense by my side. "You betrayed me; you chose her over me."
"Karabelo, please don't do this. There's still a chance to fix things!" At that, Lesego quickly sat up.
I knew she was bound to come back to life the moment she heard Zack's voice.
I made space so that she could squat next to me even though she wouldn't see much. It was a bit dark; they were only two figures standing in shadows.
"Fix what? She stole my life."
"That is not true, and you know it. She's your sister, for goodness sake!"
"I have no sister!" Silence reeked the place. "You had only one job, one job – get close enough to kill her! But you chose her over me."
"Lesego, breathe." I placed a lingering kiss on her head.
"Lee, please don't hurt her, please. She's just a victim like you are." Cold laughter rang throughout the parking lot, and Lesego sank further into me for strength.
Honestly, I wanted to get her out of here, I was starting to regret bringing her because this was the last thing I expected.
I suspected that Zack had known about Karabelo, but not like this. He'd been sent to kill Lesego?
"Hurt her?" Karabelo mocked. "Brother, she's six-feet under – your favourite girl is dead."
I shut my eyes and held Lesego tightly as an agonizing cry threatened to roar the entire place down.
Zack dropped to his knees and clutched his chest as if his heart would burst out in pain.
My own heart sored at the sight, he really loved her. He cared about Lesego.
I looked down at her and found her staring at him as if she was staring at a blank wall. Her eyes were so hollow, she looked almost numb. I could only imagine what was going through her head right now.
An unexpected movement from behind caused Lesego to jerk and hit the truck, and I quickly covered her mouth with my palm to muffle her yelp.
"Dammit!" Karabelo had sensed that there was someone, because she came out of the shadows.
"Did you hear that?" She asked.
I quickly wrapped Lesego in my arms and rolled under the truck with her as Karabelo's footsteps came closer.
She walked around the truck in careful steps as if stepping on glass, and then she came to a halt right where we were hiding.
Lesego started to wiggle in my hold as the imposter's feet slowly lowered to the ground.
We were screwed!
