I'd never had to plead my innocence as I did at this moment. Things escalated so fast, and I had no other choice but to run away.
I'd messed up, and that was totally on me, but I didn't kill Funeka.
However, my running away was not any convincing.
I couldn't believe this had dragged on for so long, while trying to figure out all the clues around this puzzle, Karabelo continued wreaking havoc in our lives.
I should have been prepared for things to turn this way when Lesego refused to kill her after Bridgette trapped her in the forest.
I still don't know how Funeka got there, but somehow, she did.
I wanted to kill Karabelo myself, so when Funeka called and told me that she'd located her, I went there to meet her, but in a turn of events, I found Funeka dead.
And before I knew it, there were police sirens around the area.
Lucky for me, Clay was the one that helped me get away, because we'd planned to take out Karabelo together.
"I swear I didn't do it; I didn't kill her." I tried to explain to the furious Lesego in front of me.
"Your husband came to my house," she said furiously. "Do you understand that? If he puts two and two together, he's going to ruin everything!"
My heart skipped a beat as her voice echoed throughout the apartment.
I knew right away that not only was she mad about Ryan's visit, but the fact that Clay sheltered me.
"I didn't do it! And we wouldn't be here if you'd just put an end to this?" I snapped. "I'm tired of you going around and putting the blame on everyone else for your own mistakes."
"She did not do it." A male voice says from behind me. Dammit, Clay!
He was defending me, which would only influence her anger, because truth be told, she hated the idea of us being together. Physically.
Yes, she knew that nothing was going on between the two of us, but that did nothing for her insecurities.
Lesego swallowed, a pool of tears about to fall down her face, but she holds them back and is further interrupted by her phone ringing.
She frowned at her phone. "It's your husband." What?
"Why is he calling you?"
Now it was my turn to be jealous. It was no secret that Lesego was beautiful, she had every man around her on their knees. She was the type of woman Ryan went for before me.
Lesego let her phone go to voicemail. Why was she acting so nervous? Ryan knew about her and Karabelo, I told him everything after I left Adelaide's house.
But I doubt she needed to hear that right now
"Answer it," Clay prompted when the phone rang for the second time.
She sucked in a deep breath and pressed the phone against her ear. "Lesego Isabelle Medupe speaking, hello?" She answered. Did she just say her entire name?
"Okay I'll be there. Can we meet two hours from now, Det-" She cringed and looked at me, her cheeks slightly pink. Is she blushing? "Thanks for the call, Ryan. Bye." She quickly hung up and threw her phone on the couch before she started pacing pack and forth.
What did Ryan say to get her so worked up?
She paused in her steps and rolled her eyes as soon as they landed on us.
"He wants us to meet." Clay tensed on my side. "What do I do?" She asked in panic, wiping her sweaty hands on her brown leather jacket.
"What does he want?" I asked.
She glared at me and took a step closer, her arms folded. "I have no idea. He probably wants to question me about Funeka. But since you say you are innocent, maybe you can help us find the real killer."
"What?" I snapped. She wanted me to tail Karabelo after she just killed Funeka?
She shrugged mockingly. "Or I could just save us all the trouble and tell your husband where you are."
I shook my head at her. "You know what, Lesego? Right now, I'm having trouble figuring out the difference between you and your twin sister."
She tensed; her eyes set on me murderously. "Really? I can't believe you right now!"
"What's unbelievable is you treating me like a murderer after everything we've been through together!" I yelled in her face, I felt like slapping her, but Clay pulled me back.
He stood between Lesego and I as if hell was about to break loose. "Abigail, calm down. And Lesego, I think you should leave."
The hurt look on Lesego's face made my insides twist.
"I see," she croaked. "I'll just..." She picked her phone off the couch. "The main reason I came here was to tell you that I'm going to see Lwandle, because I suspect that she might be involved," She said quietly once at the door.
"But Lwandle couldn't have been involved, she's protected. We all are!"
She shook her head. "That's what I thought too until I discovered that the white beads are for protection against ghosts, not evil spirits or demons."
What?
"No, Bridgette said–"
"Bridgette is nowhere to be found. So, before you judge me for my opinions, how about you think hard about what happened last night, because news flash –
none of us are protected!" She banged the door on her way out.
Clay turned to me with distrustful eyes. No!
"It was not me; I swear, I didn't kill her!"
He dragged his hand through his hair. "Maybe not. But are you sure she did not possess you?" He questioned.
My blood ran cold as Lesego's words echoed in my mind.
What if Karabelo's evil spirit used me to kill Funeka and release Karabelo from the forest?
