Okay, maybe I lost control of things along the way.
The plan was simple: take out Karabelo.
However, she was my twin sister, my own flesh and blood, and I was hoping that I could get her to see that we were both victims of a hospital scheme that saw many lives being ruined.
After our chat, she convinced me that she was not aware of her actions, because she was not on control of her own body, and when she showed me that footage, I believed her.
I even invited her into our home with the hope that we could work together to put an end to this whole syndicate, but she turned against me.
She really wanted me dead.
Clearly, she'd escaped from the trap Bridgette set for her, the only thing keeping me at ease was that she couldn't access my house because it was protected, at least she wouldn't get close to my family.
I just hope she was not tracking me down, because if she did, everyone I met with would be endangered.
I looked at my phone for the nth time. I'd been waiting here at Good Morning Café for an hour now, and the detective was still a no-show.
He called me again after I left Clay's apartment to change the location.
I couldn't be out here for so long, not to mention that I still needed to see Lwandle.
Just as I was getting ready to leave, he arrived.
"Sorry for keeping you," He said, settling on the chair opposite me.
"Detective Dan-"
"Ryan," He interrupted.
I gave him a tight smile. Did he really interrupt me for that?
"I don't think we are going to be on first name basis after what you did," I said blankly.
I could never forget how he played part in having me locked up in prison for months and how they tried to have me killed.
"I guess I deserve that."
He called over a waiter and ordered coffee for us both, this would be my third cup.
"Thank you," I said to the waiter before turning my attention to the detective. "Why did you call me here?"
He played with his spoon; his eyes trained on the table. "I know I've done some despicable things to you and everyone around you, and I'm truly sorry," he said sombrely. "The truth is I've never been a good cop, and I made a lot of mistakes along the way. Unfortunately, Karabelo has been using that to blackmail me."
I should have been surprised, but I knew he knew about me and my twin the moment he showed up at my house.
Not to mention that I would never put it past Abigail to hide things from me.
"Why did you call me here?" I repeated.
What? I was not trying to be mean or anything, but I wasn't about to kiss his hands because of his sudden change of heart.
He called me hear because he needed something from me.
He nodded and took out something from his interior leather jacket pocket, and then placed it in front of me.
It was a clear plastic with a familiar heart-shaped necklace in it.
"I bought that for her on our anniversary two years ago," he spoke with his hands over his mouth and nose. "She never takes it off."
And whenever she did, she could never take it off on her own. She always complained about the clipper.
"You found it at the crime scene," I stated knowingly.
"This has Karabelo written all over it. She told me she was coming after me, and she knows the only way to get to me is through my wife."
My heart swelled for him. He might not give a shit about anyone out there, but he sure as hell loved his wife.
"Are you going to hand that over?" I asked, and he shook his head.
"That's why I called you here." He placed the plastic in my hand. "Please give this to Abigail when you see," he said with surety in his eyes. It was as if he knew I'd just come from seeing her. "Tell her that I'm sorry, and that I love her."
I felt my blood run cold, because his words sounded so final.
What was he planning to do?
"What are you going to do? I hope you are not planning on taking on Karabelo on your own."
He gave me a small smile and shrugged. "Somebody has to pull this whole thing off before another person dies."
And I couldn't agree more, but I'd be damned if I saw another person get hurt because of Karabelo, and I knew he was headed down that path.
