When I received a call from Clay, I couldn't believe it.
This place was a wreck. It would have made the perfect hideout, but whatever was here made sure that it didn't happen.
Someone was keeping an eye on Lesego.
My suspicions were confirmed, something supernatural and evil was lurking amongst us, and my gut told me that this was Karabelo's work.
Karabelo was what we referred to as an 'Inyanga', a traditional healer that practices sorcery and witchcraft.
The twins come from a family of traditional healers, Karabelo had found her calling about a year ago. I was still to break the news to Lesego because she also has a calling.
Every bad thing that has been happening to her is no coincidence, her ancestors were punishing her because she'd been resisting her calling for years.
Being raised by a coloured mother, I believed she was not aware of her ancestry, but her mother was.
From was I discovered, Elizabeth has been giving her traditional medicine to keep her in the dark, and in turn, the ancestors were punishing Lesego for the evil deeds.
If things have come to this point, Lesego had to start with her initiation to become a Sangoma in order to put a stop to Karabelo.
Karabelo was no longer a Sangoma, she was now a witch after her ancestors took away her gift because she'd used her powers to perform an evil ritual.
And now she'd summoned an evil spirit to kill Lesego, and as long as Lesego was still alive, the spirit would remain.
Oh, no! This means she knows – Karabelo knows that Lesego is still alive. It had to be the only explanation.
What game was she playing at now?
"So, let me get this straight," I said, trying to understand what Lesego was telling me. "She was looking at you, but couldn't see you?" She nodded, hugging herself.
"She was looking at us, but through us as if we weren't there," Lesego said. "And her eyes had a strange colour."
"Yeah, they looked sort of yellowish or reddish, I couldn't really tell," Clay finally joined in on the convo. He had been quiet since I got here.
Clay was the only person that knew about my calling, and he sent me an SMS with a location, telling me that there's a situation that required my expertise.
"So, what do you think happened here?" He asked. "If this was a natural tornado or hurricane, then it would have affected the surrounding areas too. But whatever it was, it aimed to destroy the cottage."
Your girlfriend, you mean. I thought but didn't say it out loud.
If I tell them that Karabelo sent an evil spirit after Lesego, I might as well tell them that she knows Lesego is alive.
I needed a second opinion first from someone who's been in the business longer than I have.
My phone rang for the hundredth time, I checked the caller ID and ignored it. I had missed calls from both my mother and Ryan.
"I will look into it and let you guys know," I said, and he nodded.
"I'm still confused about why she didn't see us under the truck," Lesego muttered.
Yeah, I was also confused about that part.
"Do you remember any other details about the event?"
"Not necessarily, no," she said thoughtfully. "But there was a cat."
I only knew one person who was fond of her cats.
Bridgette.
I shut my eyes and rubbed my forehead. Can't believe she intervened again.
Lesego walked over to the scene to assess the damage closely.
Clay took this chance to come to me. "Are you okay? You look troubled."
I sighed. "Yeah, story of my life." He gave me a questioning look, and I shook my head with a sad smile. "Nothing new, I just had a fight with Ryan," I said, trying my best to sound as nonchalant as possible.
"Why don't you just leave him?" He asked.
I shot him a look. "Did you leave Lesego when she was busy with Sihle?" I asked.
He gave me a tight-lipped mocking smile. "It was not the same. I didn't give up on Lesego 'cause I knew she loved me."
My heart hardened. "Thank you for pointing that out, Clay."
A grimace crossed his face and he looked at me with pity. "I didn't mean it like that."
"Of course, you didn't," I bit out.
"Is everything okay over there?" We both turned to Lesego who looked worried, and I stormed off without saying anything.
I was never the one who believed in love portions before, but I've heard that a lot of people do it.
Deep down I knew Ryan still loved me.
I just had to find a way to make him see that again.
But first, I had to find Bridgette, she was a difficult one to track down.
