Tleigh's POV
When you're caught in between what you think you know and the what ifs, I don't know which one exactly wins.
Like for example now, am at the airport smiling at a kid who seems to be liking the faces am making at across where am standing, waiting for my luggage. He's with someone who seems to be the dad and he's busy checking his watch and it is like he's impatient from the way he's bouncing one of his legs. His back is to me, and he's wearing a cap. I can't make out his face but his body is a structure and I can't deny that.
I don't know why am assessing this stranger in particular but am more attracted to the kid who is now making faces back at me. I've never seen a kid this beautiful before. There's something about this kid I can't quite put a finger to. Or maybe it's just the way she smiles so sweetly after making faces, or it's her long hair, or her eyelashes, or her little button nose, or her hazel eyes, or her milky white teeth, or the dimples, or her neat pigtails...
Or it's the way I'm starting to relate her...
The what ifs...
Maybe if that accident didn't happen...
Stop it Tleigh! I shake my head as thoughts start swarming my head and I close my eyes tightly trying to get rid of them but when I screw my eyes open I loose the sight of that kid who had somehow warmed my heart mere seconds ago. Then I make out the figure of the man who was carrying that kid diminishing as he walks off into the deeper parts of the airport. It seems like they're travelling, they had not landed, they're going somewhere... Or visiting, or going back to where they came from...I don't know.
My eyes follow them lazily and the warmth spreads again in my heart as I notice the little hands of that baby hanging in the air as they continue walking to the field. Somehowly, I raise my hand and wave back at the kid even though I know the she can't see me clearly.
Something I'm sure of, they aren't using public means. They have something like a private jet, okay it's because of the path the man took. It's for high class people, for ministers, just big sharks.
By the time I find my luggage, I feel like I can't stand long. As I get outside and the crisp Hudson air hits my face, I feel the hominess and let out a contented sigh trying to take in the Hudson air as much as I can. It contrasts the smoky Chicago air.
I find a cab almost instantly and I decide to take it because I don't want to disturb my dad. The drive to my place is mostly filled with the hum of my driver who is infact a very baldy old man who should be enjoying his retirement bonuses with his wife or grandkids someplace in Maldives or even just roasting meat at his home.
Ughhhh,,,, when did I became this analysing judgy person?
Anyway, as I was saying he's been humming to his poor choice of music or should I say, the old people type of music. I should have taken even a nap but his humming is really disturbing.
When we finally pull up to our driveway, a tired smile pulls up on my lips. Our house is exactly the way I left it, except a few roses that have been planted some distance away from the ones that were on my mother's porch.
After paying the cab man and close the gate, I literally run towards the house and as if on cue, Fiula shows up and then he starts running when he sees me. He almost knocks me down, jumping on me, panting heavily. He has grown so much and I feel that I've missed so many things. Like for example, my mother's roses which are now tall and blooming...
After petting my sweet germany dog, I start walking with him up the few staircases leading to our sitting room as it fans its tail happily beside me.
It's as if Zila and my dad aren't aware of my presence as they are busy talking, eating at the same time. They're sitting at the dinning room which is just adjacent to the sitting room and are talking about something serious and I can see it from the way my dad stresses, lines forming on his forehead.
