George Hum:

Saturday, September 5th—

Today is the first day of school. Right now it is 7 AM. My alarm is still on, but I want to freeze it so badly that it'll stop ringing. However, I can't do that because it's the only alarm I've got. I finally get out of bed in 10 minutes and go to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I can barely see a thing, though. I have a habit of never remembering to put on my glasses before getting out of bed and so mornings are always a bit frustrating. Nevertheless, I eventually find my contacts and put them on. I don't wear glasses to school, only contacts because from what I've learned, it is never good to fight with glasses on. Kids these days fight all the time and you can never be certain when you're going to be dragged into one. Thus, you should always wear contacts to school unless you want to have your glasses broken every single day. I'm pretty strong though, and I've never actually got my glasses broken in a fight before, but who knows? I may find an opponent stronger than me today.

I go to the living room and pour myself a glass of milk. Gonna have it with cookies today. I take a seat and put my food on the table. Matthew's already eating his and studying his schedule and Roy's eating by the balcony again. I guess he really likes the view there.

"So the schedule's up?" I ask.

"Yeah," Matthew says. "Was up yesterday at 8."

"Oh," I say, taking out my phone to see. "So what do you have for your elective?"

"I have music," Matthew says. "Violin class with Ms. Smyth. What do you have?"

"I have sports and other activities with Mr. Ben," I say. I enjoy doing stuff like archery and camping and sports, so I chose this elective. I wonder how I'll do.

"What's your first class for today?" Matthew asks. In Dawns, we have school 6 days a week, from Monday to Saturday. Today is Saturday so I have, "coding with Ms. C first."

"Okay. I have social studies with Mr. Faw," Matthew says.

"What do you think our new teachers will be like?" I ask.

"They're probably decent people unlike the ones in those other schools," Matthew mutters. I hear him say, "Like Mr..." but I couldn't make out the rest.

"Sorry," I say. "What was that last bit? Didn't catch you there."

"Oh, nothing," Matthew says. He avoids my eyes for a second and I wonder why. For the next few seconds, neither of us speak. I decide to make things less awkward by changing the topic.

"So...do you want to go to school with me and Roy?" I ask Matthew.

"Sure," he says. He sounds a bit weak all of a sudden, but returns to his normal state by saying, "Where's your homeroom?"

I check my phone and say, "Room 303."

"Me too," Matthew says. "With Ms. Lily, right?"

"Yep," I say. I'm glad the conversation is a bit more lively now.

"Same here," Roy says, coming into the living room now. "We should spend the first two periods in homeroom since this is our first day if I'm not wrong."

"Yeah," I say. There is a letter enclosed at the bottom saying that. It also says to be early just in case since it can be crowded on the first day.

"Well guys, let's get going," I say, and bring my clean up my breakfast. Within 7 minutes, we're heading to the school. It is only 7:45 right now, but I see dozens of heads all in front of Dawns.

"Yo," I say, as I see Emma and Selena making their way to us.

"Hey," Emma says and Selena smiles. I guess Selena's a bit shy. She doesn't really talk much.
