It was late, they knew that by how dark the sky was getting. That didn't stop them chasing Dustin through the woods. "Somethings happening" her little brother announced since the metal capsule in his hand was going crazy. He took off running infront of them. "Dustin ? Can you slow down ? Dustin ?" Eddie called as the boy turned around but didn't look where he was going. "I think we're getting close" he said through a smile. "To death ? You're about to walk on water" Delilah shouted as Eddie grabbed the boys shoulders. "Watch your step big guy" he warned, trying to get him to stay still.
"Oh man, you gotta be shitting me" Steve said as Eddie nodded. "Yeah I thought these woods for familiar" he said since the compass led them to a lake instead of a gate. "Lovers Lake" Robin said in awe. She'd dreamt of taking somebody there for years, Delilah knew all about it. All Robin wanted was to get a canoe and row around the lake talking about anything and everything with the person she loved. "This is confounding" Dustin said, in the same state of awe. "Confounding ?" Delilah whispered, not understanding the meaning of the world. "There's a gate in Lovers Lake ?" Max asked, it was the only logical explanation of leading them there. "Whenever the Demogorgan attacked, it was always left an opening. Maybe Vecna's the same way" Nancy explained, it was all coming together for the two who never really should've graduated and the one who was never going to graduate.
"Yeah, only one way to find out" Steve said, just wanting to find it. Eddie led them over to a part of the woods where he knew boats were hidden. He lifted up the tarp and he and Steve began carrying it to the water. "Easy. I..I said easy. Man" Steve said since Eddie wanted to find it fast. "Sorry" the boy answered innocently. The pair were bent down at the boat so Robin used their shoulders as things to lean on to get in safely, Delilah did the same. Eddie got Nancy on,after that Dustin tried. "Hey, easy, are you trying to sink us ?. This thing holds three peoples tops" Eddie warned as the boy looked at them dumbfounded. "It's better this way, okay ? You guys stay here with Max" Nancy said, wanting as many people to be with the girl as possible. "Delilah makes it four" the boy whined as the girl shrugged. "I've been stuck as the babysitter all the time. It's my turn to go" she whined back. "Just keep an eye out for trouble" Nancy said through a smile, trying to get them to stop arguing.
"You keep an eye out" Dustin protested. "It's my goddamn theory" he continued, he was offended. "No, alright, no. It's too dangerous" Delilah eventually said. She didn't want her mother to have to hear that both of her children had died tragically. "You heard Lilah" Robin said, not going to argue with the girl. "Who put her in charge ?" he asked, even more offended. "I'm not...Nancy is" she said, trying to find the most responsible of the group. "She also told you no, so there's your answer" she lectured as Nancy smiled, they were finally getting along. "Compass ?" Nancy asked smugly with her hand out as the boy reluctantly handed it to her. "There you go" Steve shouted while throwing the backpack at the defeated boy and getting on the boat to sail off.
"You said three, four was a push" Dustin shocked as Steve waved at him. "Sorry" he said half-heartedly, he wasn't sorry. "Bedtime at nine kiddos" Robin shouted as Delilah laughed. "Ten if you do your chores, I'll know" she joked back as both girls were in hysterics. "Miss you already" they shouted in sync before falling into each other with laughter.
The boys and Robin rowed while Nancy and Delilah looked at the compass. It was spinning faster and faster once they got to a certain point. "Shit, shit" Delilah whispered as Nancy nodded. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down guys" she said so they did. Steve shone his flashlight on the light on Nancy's hand, they were all in shock. "Guys. What's going on. Come on. Talk to me, guys talk to me" the device in Delilah's hand boomed out, it was her brother. "Your little compass has gone from wonky-" she began as Robin leant back so she could speak. "To wonky with a captain ahh" the girl said which made Delilah laugh. Steve started taking off his shoes which alerted all of them.
"Steve, what are you doing ?" Nancy asked as Delilah kept laughing. "What are you going to do ? Strip for Vecna ?" she asked as the boy shook his head. "Somebody's gotta go down there and check this thing out, unless one of you four can top being Hawkins High swim co-captain and a certified life guard for three years. It's gotta be me, no complaints" he said, continuing to take off his socks. "I'm not complaining, I do not want to go down there" Eddie said, just happy to be above water. "Y-yeah, me either" Delilah said quietly, the laughter stopped. She was afraid again, fear was something Delilah rarely felt until being dragged into the group. Steve was putting himself in danger for Max, Eddie and her. She'd hold herself responsible no matter what.
He took off his sweater, they all watched in awe as Eddie began emptying the contents of his plastic bag. He wrapped a flashlight in the bag and handed in to Steve. "Hey, good luck" Eddie said as the boy smiled and thanked him. Eddie went to light a cigarette, Robin took it out of his mouth, referred to it as "gross" and Delilah grabbed it from Robin, letting it rest in her mouth. She needed something to distract her from Steve potentially diving to his death. "S-Steve ?" she said as he nodded and turned to look at her. "You put a time limit on Max, I'm putting one on you" she said honestly as he smiled at her before diving in.
She took a long inhale of the cigarette before passing it to Eddie. She was staring into the abyss until something clicked in her head so she picked up the walkie-talkie. "WaterGate" she sang into it as Dustin laughed. "I told them that, they didn't understand" he said, still laughing. She put it down then, her mind working overtime. Eddie could see it so passed it back to her. "No, gross" Robin scolded before taking it out of her mouth and flicking it into the ocean. "What are we at, Nance ?" Delilah asked, her whole body was shaking, she was worried that she'd topple the boat. "Closing in on a minute" she read from her watch. "Is he close to drowning or finding a gate ?" Delilah asked, she was panicking so she was saying whatever was in her head. "This is Steve Harrington, he found something. The asshole always got whatever he wanted" Eddie joked, it out her at ease though. He was right.
Delilah was basically hanging over the boat, waiting for signs of life until Steve emerged out of nowhere, splashing and scaring them all. "Steve" she whispered relieved as he smiled. "I found it" he announced while grabbing both of her arms. "You did ?" she asked, happy as he nodded. "Dustin, you're a goddamn Einstein, Steve found the gate" Robin began but they were met by silence. "It's pretty wild, it's more of a snack-sized gate than a momma gate but it's pretty damn big" he explained before dropping into the water and coming back up. "That's not funny, I could've fallen in" she scolded as he shook his head. "Delilah, that wasn't me" he said, afraid, something was pulling him.
He dropped again, this time the pull was strong, he was going under no matter how hard she tried to pull him up so eventually she gave up. She dove overboard with him. "Delilah. No" Robin shouted since they were all hollering the names of the two. Still clinging onto Steve's arms, she dropped into the water and he or whatever was pulling him began guiding her. They were both screaming for dear life as they sank deeper and deeper. A red light was blinding her and Steve was being pulled towards it which meant she was too. Whatever had him caught pulled them both into it. She was certain she'd meet her end there.
They submerged in a dark, dreary version of their world with monster like bats screaming at them and vines everywhere. She let go of him, it was a vine that had been pulling him, it dragged him across the floor to wherever it had spawned from. It let go of him then, there were flashes of red thunder and she just stood there, she couldn't move, fear had truly taken ever.
"Delilah ? Delilah ? Are you fucking crazy ?" he shouted but the relief that she was there and he wasn't alone and that she loved him that much she'd risk her own life for him took over. "What was I meant to do ? Let you die and steal all my spotlight ?" she shouted through tears as he burst into laughter. Even in the darkest times, she still found a way to be her sarcastic self. They were interrupted by a shriek, it was an animal of some sort and it was coming for them. "Oh fuck no" she shouted before stepping towards him. He instinctively wrapped an arm around her before running to grab two sticks. He kept one and handed one to her, they were ready. Bat-like creatures began flying towards them as they hit them away. One wrapped his tail around Steve's neck which sent him flying to the ground. "No you don't you little asshole" she shouted before jabbing it in the head until it died and continued to hit the ones coming at her. He was just getting up when one bit him right in the stomach. She was outnumbered and she just had to watch as they surrounded him. She was screaming as loud as she could, this was way worse than the Russians beating him up.
