"I swear to god, the second we kick this creeps ass. I'm taking you to dinner and I'm asking you out again, properly" he said enthusiastically as she smiled. "It's a date" she said back in the same tone. Delilah Henderson calling them hanging out a date was the only thing Steve Harrington had wanted for weeks. Them hanging out would be the same as it always was, it wouldn't be to babysit her brother and his friends or fight the unknown. It would just be Steve and Delilah, Delilah and Steve.
"Hey guys ! You guys ! Awesome news. It looks like we weren't going the wrong way after all. Come on. Let's go" Robin screamed as they smiled and followed their friend further into the woods. "Slow down Robs" she shouted after her as Robin laughed. "Keep up Lilah" she shouted back as they picked up to their pace to see Nancy across the street from the Creel house. They could see a light in the playground which could only mean one thing. Erica was there and waiting.
"Okay, the lovebirds have copied. Max is moving into Phase Two: distracting Vecna" Erica said which travelled to where they were. "So far, so smooth" Robin commented as Delilah mumbled a "mhmm", her head was pounding but she wouldn't dare tell any of them that. "We're not even at the hard part yet" Steve kept going, they thought they were getting somewhere. "Take the bait you son of a bitch" Nancy whispered to the house as Delilah just kept nodding along. She could feel a hot substance trickle down her nose, when she swiped it, it was blood. Again, she wouldn't dare tell them. She had her fingers crossed and was praying to every god to just let her do this without anything happening.
They hadn't heard a signal for anyone in minutes, the plan wasn't working in Max's favour. Delilah, now getting panicked, kept trying to stop the blood coming from her nose until everything went black. She opened her eyes again to see herself in the same place, except it was just Steve standing in-front of her. "W-where is everybody ?" she asked, her breath was hitched, she knew what was about to happen. "You fainted. I was waiting here with you" the boy said, he turned around then, his face was normal, everything seemed to be normal so she felt at ease.
"Did we get him ?" she asked, she sounded half excited, half drained as the boy hung his head sadly. "I don't know how to tell you this, Lilah" he said, he sounded broken, he looked like he'd been crying. "Just say it" she said with her head titled, she couldn't understand what happened. "Oh god, you must've really hit your head, you fainted when Robin told you the first time. We didn't get him, he got Dustin" the boy whispered as the girl burst into laughter.
"Yeah, good one" she said, still laughing as the boys face broke even more. "He tried to fight off the bats, alerted him, he just, ran out of time" the boy said as the girl burst into tears. "You're lying, you're lying" she shouted while pounding on his chest as he wrapped his arm around her. "You will join him soon" a voice that definitely wasn't Steve's shouted, she looked up to see Vecna with his arms wrapped around her. She was in danger.
"Why's he not taking the bait ?" Nancy asked confused until they heard Robin shriek behind them. "Did Delilah hit her head or something ? She's covered in blood" she rambled through tears. Next to Robin and behind Steve and Nancy stood Delilah, a couple of feet in the air. Vecna didn't take the bait because he could already feel that Delilah was coming. "Oh fuck, she was trying to hide it. Music ?" Steve asked hopefully as both girls shook their head. "I wasn't prepared for an unplanned attack" Robin said with her head in her hands. "Oh god, oh god" she kept whispering as Steve tried to shake the girl and Nancy kept clicking her fingers.
Meanwhile Vecna had his hand over Delilah's face, he had her now, she knew they had no music, no means to get rid of him. She shut her eyes, trying to find memories but she couldn't. It was as if her brain had been wiped. She shut her eyes and opened them, trying to pretend it was a dream.
Expecting nothing too severe to happen, Nancy and Steve kept shaking her until she rose higher, her head bent further back and one of her arms snapped. "Delilah" Steve cried out but nothing was going to help. He was clinging to Robin as Nancy kept trying to think of ways to help her.
She closed her eyes, trying to brace herself for any pain about to come her way but when she opened them, she was in the Creel House. Vecna's mouth was open, he didn't expect to transport her there. She could see Max and Lucas in the attic. "Max ? What are you doing in here ?" the man snarled, then Delilah felt herself plummet from the height he put her at and fall to the ground.
"Thank fuck" Robin shouted while wrapping her arms around her, Steve was cupping her face as she tried to catch her breath. "He fell for it, he has Max" she said, still in tears from the ploy the monster had used: using Steve to lie about her brothers death. "Are you alright ? Are you okay ? We need to get in there" Robin kept asking as Steve nodded and helped her up. "My arm" she whined as Steve took off his borrowed vest, put her head through an armhole and used the other to nurse her elbow, the makeshift sling would have to do.
There was a much bigger, much more viscous thing to fight.
