Delilah Henderson took up all three seats of her mother, Lil's Ford Mustang because she'd been lying across them listening to music on her Walkman for most of the journey. Lil drove Delilah and her little brother Dustin back from Camp Know Where. Dustin had been the attendee of the camp, Delilah was just there to keep her mother company because long car rides could get lonely.
She was the complete opposite of her brother. For a start, she definitely wasn't as smart as him. She had just graduated high school but was still waiting on an acceptance letter from one school, any school at that. Just to feel accepted somewhere. She also wasn't as nice and kind as him and she certainly didn't have a strong group of friends like he did. She spent her four years of hell floating between Robin, Keith and even occasionally Jonathan Byers, three other outcasts at Hawkins High. The only thing that pin-pointed them as siblings was their insanely curly hair, Delilah's stopped just below her shoulders and their matching brown eyes. Other than that, they weren't similar in the slightest.
"This is gold leader reporting to base. Do you-" Dustin shouted for what felt like the thousandth time since getting into the car which made their mother avert her focus from the road. "Honey" she said trying to calm him down, she was looking at him now and a crash was becoming a huge possibility. "What ?" he snapped as she sighed, she didn't know how to say what she needed to say so she just ripped the band-aid off. "You've been away for a whole month. Maybe they just...forgot" she said, turning her eyes back to the road in the process which Delilah nodded at. "Yeah Dusty Buns, I think I even forgot about you for a while. Maybe this is just confirmation that your other little weirdo friends just don't care about you" she taunted as he turned around to look at her.
"How many more times ? That name is reserved for-" he began as she pretended to gag. "Susie Poo. How could I forget ?" she said over enthusiastically which was meant as sarcasm and he caught onto. "I didn't think this was possible but I found someone I didn't miss" he said as she mimicked him which led to him mimicking her and that combined led to noise which caused their mother to chime in.
"Dusty. Lilah. This is your first time seeing each-other after a month. Be nice to each-other. If not for yourselves, do it for my sanity" she said as Delilah plastered a fake smile across her face. "You're right mom. I'm sorry Dusty Buns, I can't wait to see what inventions you made at camp. I bet Mister Clarke will be so impressed" she said sarcastically but their mother wasn't catching on and just smiled. "Oh look, we're at the mall. Have fun, y'know with all of your friends" he jabbed as they pulled into the parking lot to drop her off. Annoyed that he poked at her lack of friends, she retaliated by sitting up and kicking the back of his seat full force which made him jolt forward and their mother came to a stop.
"You had no seat belt on this whole time ?" she asked as the girl shrugged. "They're not ignoring you Dusty. They have a surprise welcome for you back at the house" she said before covering her mouth. "Oops, shouldn't have said that" she said sarcastically as she grabbed her backpack and got out. She could hear her mother shouting her name, she was saying Delilah though which could only mean trouble. She walked into the huge mall in-front of her knowing her destination, Scoops Ahoy.
It didn't take her long to find it and once she eventually got there she was greeted by Steve Harrington trying to talk to a girl who looked far from interested. The girl stood there looking slightly creeped out with her friend while Steve talked about FurDuf, making up bullshit about how he wanted real life experience as opposed to academics. Once he finished his ramble, he asked the girl if she wanted to hang out sometime but she was just plain rude and obnoxiously laughed which Delilah mocked making the two girls stop and turn around to give her a judgemental stare before turning back to pay. Her friend Robin was in the background doing a tally on a whiteboard and it looked to be about the sixth mark.
Eventually, they got their ice cream and left and she was left standing face-to-face with the boy she truly believed was a douchebag of the highest order, not realising her brothers friendship with him. Delilah didn't believe what Dustin told her had actually happened to Will. She thought it was all too interesting, all too surreal to be happening in a town like theirs. Dustin tried to tell her that was the point but she refused to believe it.
She stepped forward and scanned the big case of ice-cream, really observing all of the flavours as Steve ranted to Robin about how he didn't actually get into a college which she wasn't surprised at. "Cookie dough" she announced as Steve nodded before scooping her desired flavour onto a cone. "Oh, I see how it is. I have to have a college name plastered across my tits for you to speak to me like you do to the other girls" she said with an eyebrow raised. "Excuse me" he said confused while handing her cone. "You've always been the same Harrington. Always the same. I could be preparing to go to Yale. I am actually and you're letting this hot potential Yale girlfriend get away" she said while tucking into her ice-cream before handing him the two dollars.
"D-do I know you ?" he asked, clearly taken off guard that the random girl had walked in and started speaking to him the way she did. She just laughed and waved at Robin who smiled and ushered for her to come behind the counter. Delilah strutted behind the counter and into the back room leaving Steve standing there dumb-founded as he went to serve the next customer.
"You got into Yale ?" Robin asked excited as Delilah sucked in a breath. "N-not exactly, still waiting on the letter but y'know, had to make him feel somewhat inferior. I still can't believe you work with Steve Harrington" she said while licking her ice cream as Robin shrugged. "Trust me, I think Steve Hair-Ington was the highlight of my summer while you were gone" she said truthfully as the girl laughed. "Steve Hair-Ington. That has a ring to it" she said while laughing as Steve opened the two glass doors that separated the two rooms. "I can still hear you two" he said while shaking his head as Delilah nodded. "Then stop listening, it's actually very rude" she said as the boy, again, closed the doors beyond confused. He couldn't deny that she definitely looked familiar but he couldn't understand why she strutted in and acted like she owned the place.
Maybe it was the fact that this stranger was such good friends with Robin or that she knew him and he didn't have a clue who she was. He thought he knew her face from somewhere. Maybe a hookup ? She didn't seem like his type meaning people didn't know who she was and Steve was infatuated with having a girlfriend going to one of the top colleges. This wasn't going to be Delilah, he heard her conversation but she genuinely wasn't going to Yale. She hadn't let go of the idea though even if there was only three months until the semester started.
She bounced in, in a rainbow striped tank top, denim shorts and reallt scruffy converse with messy hair that was sticking up all over from lying in the car but she didn't care. She spent the first half of her summer at her grandmothers to give her mother some space while Dustin was gone and now she planned on spending her summer in the back of Scoops Ahoy during Robins shifts.
