"What is it ? What's the mystery sentence ? Is it something scary ? Are we all going to blow up ? B-because I need to be prepared" the girl rambled on. "Delilah" Dustin shouted, snapping her back to reality as she looked at him to find out the answer. "Shut up" he spat as she folded her arms and glared at him. "The week is long" was all Robin said from the glass door causing Delilah to sigh and walk back out to serve ice-cream with the boy she claimed to hate but was secretly crazy for and turned those feelings of lust into hatred.
Steve and Delilah passed the time by singing any song that came on the radio and by the time they were called back, the mall was closed. "The week is long. The silver car feeds. When blue meets yellow in the west" they all read before looking at each-other confused. "I-it just can't be right" Steve said while looking up in shock. It didn't read easy so he automatically ruled it out. "Well that's nice. Just doubt the free translation Robin spent her day trying to crack" Delilah said as he kept shaking his head. "Just doesn't make sense, that's all" he said as they all started walking out of the store. "It's right" Robin protested. "I think it's great news" Dustin added. "So much for us all being American heroes. It's all nonsense" Steve said as Delilah took his hat off just to annoy him, she succeeded.
"Woah, American heroes ? No one told me that. You're telling me we're all aiming to be in the Hawkins Post ? My picture front page for all of the colleges to see and instead I'm doing Robins job with Steve fucking Harrington" she said while adjusting on his hat on her head. "What did you think we were doing ? Translating for fun ?" her brother asked as she shrugged. "You're fucking weird Dusty. This could've been for anything" she said which he ignored. He had a lot more to worry about than one-upping his sister. "And it's not nonsense Steve. It's too specific, it has to be a code" Dustin continued as she nodded too enthusiastically, she didn't believe him, she thought his board games filled his head with fantasy and he confused it with reality. "What kind of code ?" Steve asked. "A super secret spy code" he said as she clapped her hands slowly. "I'm sorry, you two are buying this ? Dustin you probably just picked up some radio show. A Russian poetry station maybe, I don't know. I seriously don't think it's what you think it is" she began but Robin shushed her.
"Maybe she's right. It could be just a stretch" Steve said as Robin disagreed. "You're buying into this shit too" Delilah said shocked as the girl shrugged. "Let's just entertain the idea that this is a secret Russian spy transmission. What did you think they'd say ? Fire the war heads at noon" she said as Delilah shrugged. "Some of them could have brains as fried as Steve's. Maybe it's just easier to be straight forward" she said while shrugging again as Steve just lightly shoved her before laughing. "Asshole" he spat as she just stuck out her tongue.
"If they had said fried brains, they wouldn't be involved in something like this. My translation is correct. I know that for sure. The silver cat feeds. Why would anyone talk like that unless they wanted to mask the true meaning of their message ?" Robin explained as Dustin agreed but Steve and Delilah were just slightly shoving eachother behind them. Steve still listening.
The pair in the front went on about the message discussing the true meaning as Steve and Delilah stayed just as clueless. "I can't believe I'm about to agree with your strange child brother Del. But yes. Evil Russians" Robin said while laughing as Delilah laughed with her. "Meanwhile I can't believe I spent my day with my brother and Steve Harrington. It's been a weird day for all of us" she said through a laugh. "You need to stop saying my name like it's such a bad thing" he said through a laugh as she raised an eyebrow. "Is it not a bad thing ?" she asked causing him to shove her slightly again making her nearly trip over her own feet but he caught her from falling by grabbing her wrist.
She never thought she'd actually get on with him but she did. They'd been cracking jokes the whole day while slinging ice cream. However Delilah knowing herself and how up and down her mood could be. This wouldn't be the same tomorrow so she decided she was going to savour every last moment.
"So how do we crack it ?" Dustin asked excitedly as he and Robin got into more detail about cracking the code. They carried on talking but Steve had stopped infront of a tiny horse ride for children and was looking for quarters. "Quarters. I ne-do you have a quarter ?" hands before flipping the coins over in Delilah's. But, no quarters.
"Are either of you even tall enough for that ride ?" Robin joked but Steve shouted for a quarter and Delilah just hopped on the ride. "Seriously ?" Dustin asked his sister who shrugged. Once he got what he was looking for Steve put it into the coin slot and bent down and began listening to the music the ride played as Delilah just rode it in silence. She was going to take advantage of the free mall ride she didn't have to pay for.
"Need help getting up, little Stevie" Robin joked as the Henderson siblings laughed but were shushed. "Can you all shut up and listen ?" he said. It took Dustin a couple of seconds to process it but he eventually cracked it. "Holy shit" he said while taking off his backpack. "Am I missing something ?" Delilah said while going back and forth on the little horse ride.
"The music" Dustin kept repeating. "I don't understand" Robin said as the girl nodded. "Makes two of us" but Dustin pulled out the tape recorder and began playing it. Delilah hadn't heard it. All she heard were echoes of it through the wall but the music was definitely familiar. "Maybe there's horses like this in Russia" Robin asked as Steve shook his head. "Indiana Flyer. I don't think so" he said as the girl tapped the back of the plastic horse. "Giddy up Indian Flyer. Let's go bust some Russians" she said but no one else laughed. It was all becoming too serious.
"This code. It didn't come from Russia. It came from here" Steve said as fear rushed around Delilah's body and she looked between the other three who just looked alarmed but didn't seemed to be experiencing the same as her. "Suddenly being alone with you three in the mall isn't so fun anymore" she said while getting off the plastic horse and standing closer to the others.
"Come on Dusty Buns. We better get going" the girl who usually was never quiet said after a while of being silent. The four of them still just standing shell-shocked in front of the Indiana Flyer. "The names reserved for" he began as she nodded. "Susie Poo. I know. Let's go" she said but she didn't have the touch of sarcasm in her voice that she usually would. She just started dragging her feet as she walked away. She was afraid.
"Hey ! Uh, I'll give you two a ride. No big deal. I need to drop Robin back anyway" Steve shouted after them as the Henderson siblings shrugged before following the two Scoops Ahoy employees to Steve's car. "It's actually my moms car which I'm not supposed to have and I'm guessing you want a ride too little Stevie ?" Robin said with an eyebrow raised as Steve admitted that he was in fact lying.
Robin drove without a licence, Dustin insisted that he should sit in the front and Delilah and Steve sat in the back. "You're awfully quiet. I thought I'd enjoy it but now you're just scaring me even more. Are you alright ?" he asked the curly haired girl who shrugged. "Just spooked" she said truthfully as he turned to look at her. The other two were back focused, talking about what this code could mean. "We're going to stop it. There's no reason to be scared" he said softly as she shrugged. "I-I think I'll spend the rest of my summer at the pool" she joked as Steve scoffed.
"With Billy Hargrove oogling over you. Gross, no I don't think, then you'd have reason to be scared. I think you're better off with us, trying to figure out what's going on even if you're just slinging ice cream atleast I'll know-sorry, you'll know Dustin is safe" he said while pointing at his hat she was still wearing. "Keep it for work tomorrow" he then added as she just made a face at him but kept the hat on. It stayed on her head when Dustin said it was their stop and they got out.
"You like Steve" Dustin kept taunting while nudging her as she shook her head. "I don't" she said while walking towards the front door. "Oh but you totally do. Stay with us Delilah, at-least I'll know your safe, oh sorry, I mean at-least you'll know Dustin's safe while you look at him all dough eyed. You totally do" he said while doing that annoying purr she hated so much. "Why are you insulting my intelligence by assuming I'd like a douchebag like Steve Harrington. Even if I was so dumb, he wouldn't like me. He picks girls purely off popularity which, as you keep reminding me, I have none of" she said while looking at her brother before storming inside. Goddamnit Steve Harrington.
