Chapter 22 (Girl V.S. Boy)
Everything has been going great. No tension, no hatred, no nothing. It was beginning to be like Brandon and I had never hated each other before.
There was, however, still drama with Matthew and Rose but we tried to ignore it. As long as he was happy, it would be fine.
I took a deep breath. Today was the assembly to kick off the new school year. I have no idea why they would do it this late. Usually they do it at the beginning, like the first day of school. “Nervous?” Janice sang into my ear, nudging me.
I chuckled. “Please, I play high school soccer on a boy’s team.”
“I guess you are right. You shouldn’t be nervous that you are about to sing in front of a lot of people soon,” Janice said, shrugging.
I glared at her. She was right. I shouldn’t be nervous. We rehearsed this many times. Just pretend this is another rehearsal.
The plan was that the students will be gathered into the gym for the assembly while the choir stay behind the curtains on the stage, ready to perform once everyone was settled. Then, the Principal and a few teachers will come and give their speeches, mostly on school rules and answering questions, as some of the parents will be there.
“It’s very simple, Mr. Wesley. When I give you the signal, you will pull the curtains. Got it?” Mrs. Gage said, walking on stage with Jacob in tow.
“Got it, ma’am. Loud and clear,” Jacob said, flashing me and Janice a grin. “But first, Mr. Loren would like to speak with you before you perform.”
Mrs Gage frowned, looking exasperated. “Mr. Loren knows I am very hectic right now. I wonder what he wants,” she said, rushing off stage.
Immediately, Jacob ran up to me and Janice. “Hello guys!” he bellowed.
Janice giggled. “Really, Jacob? Curtain puller?”
Jacob frowned. “Hey, I don’t want to sit in those chairs all assembly time. Someone’s gotta do it.”
Janice and I laughed. “So, are you guys nervous for your solos?” Jacob asked.
“I’m not. Elle is,” Janice said, grinning at me. I rolled my eyes. “I’m not nervous,” I groaned.
“You know, every student and teacher in the school is watching you. Good luck!” Jacob said, grinning deviously.
