Chapter 19 (Girl V.S. Boy)

I saw that Karen had also leant me some clothes to wear since we were staying so I wore her navy blue sweatshirt and sweat shorts with my own shoes. Brandon waited outside of the room for me for our walk.

I emerged from the room, pulling down the sweater. “Are you ready?” Brandon asked.

I nodded. “Yeah, let’s go.”

We both walked down the stairs and out the door, heading down the pathway into the forest. It was kind of scary but at the same time, kind of romantic and adventurous. Oh, who am I kidding? This is Brandon. He’s probably going to ditch me in the middle of woods. Ugh, I shouldn’t have trusted him.

“Ella?”

I turned to look at Brandon, who was frowning at me. “Uh, yeah?” I asked.

“Nothing. You just looked pretty zoned out,” Brandon said with a smirk.

“Oh, sorry. I’m just thinking,” I said, shaking my head.

“About what?” Brandon asked.

I shrugged. “Stuff, you know? This is just… Weird.”

“What’s weird?” Brandon asked, sounding seriously confused.

I sighed. “You and your mom. You and me,” I said, looking away at some bushes to avoid eye contact with him.

“I’m not going to leave you out here all by yourself if that’s what you think I’m going to do,” Brandon said with a chuckle.

I shook my head, lying. “No, I wasn’t thinking that.”

“Liar.”

“No!”

“Yeah, you’re a liar!”

I rolled my eyes at his immaturity. “Oh, shut up. Okay, fine, I was thinking about that. But you know, it’s natural for us. We can’t just drop everything we’ve said to each other in the past and be friends on this one trip. We were made to hate each other,” I said.

“Stop being so dramatic. You want to be my friend. I can tell by the look in your eyes,” Brandon said, piercing his eyes into mine.

I dropped my gaze and looked down at the floor as we walked. “And you hate being sappy. I think that was a pretty sappy line,” I said, laughing.

Brandon laughed. “That wasn’t sappy. There’s a difference.”

“Uh huh, right,” I said sarcastically.

We continued walking for a bit before I spoke again. “So, what are you going to do about your dad?” I asked.

Brandon frowned. “I don’t know. I don’t want to see him ever again.”

“He’s your dad,” I said.

“I know he is and I hate it.”

“You can’t just act that way!”

“I think I can.”

I sighed. “Brandon, I understand why you don’t like him but aren’t you even a little bit upset? Or you really do just hate your father now?”
