Chapter 17 (Girl V.S. Boy)
The drive at first was silent. None of us were speaking. Brandon had his eyes on the road, an intense stare on his face. I rested my head against the window, looking out at the starry night.
“Thank you for coming. Seriously, thank you,” Brandon said, looking quickly over at me.
I gave him a small smile in return. “You’re welcome.”
“Do you still hate me?” Brandon asked.
“I don’t know.” I honestly didn’t know.
“Oh, okay.”
It was silent again for a moment before Brandon spoke again. “So, are you going to the welcome back dance with Reed still?” he asked.
I nodded. “Yeah, I am. Are you going with anyone?”
Brandon shook his head. “I think I’m just going to skip.”
“How come?” I asked, frowning.
Brandon shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t have a date and I don’t really want to go. I’ll probably fly up to New York for a bit.”
I sighed. I remembered that he was so rich; he could basically go anywhere, anytime he wanted. “Oh, I see.”
“Is Jacob going with Janice?” Brandon asked.
I nodded. “Yeah, I think they really like each other. They aren’t dating but there was definitely something going on between the two after I saw them kissing. By the way, don’t you want to go with Selena?” I asked.
Brandon’s nose turned up, making me laugh. “No, I never go on a date with the same girl more than once. I don’t even really like Selena. She was annoying.”
I giggled. Suddenly, I yawned and felt my eyelids start to get really heavy. “Are you tired?” Brandon asked, looking over at me.
I nodded. “Yeah, actually I am.”
“You can go to sleep. I’ll wake you when we get there,” Brandon offered.
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“Yeah.”
“Okay, goodnight,” I said, closing my eyes at once.
I heard Brandon plug his iPod in and the sounds of Bring Me Flowers by Hope drifted through the speakers. I almost laughed at how he had this song in his iPod but the soothing sounds of the song drifted me to sleep.
I awoke a few hours after. I yawned and stretched myself out. The sky was dark gray, not as dark as it was a couple hours ago. “What time is it?” I asked, rubbing the sleepiness out of my eyes.
“It’s just about five in the morning. Good morning,” Brandon said.
“Good morning,” I mumbled, yawning again.
I looked out the window to see a whole field of corn pass by, with stacks of hay lying around. In the distance, cows were wandering around. “Are you tired?” I asked.
Brandon waved his hand in a so-so gesture. “A bit but I’m fine.”
The car ride got silent once again so I decided to make conversation. “So, did you hear? Rose and Matthew are together again,” I said.
Brandon frowned. “Ugh, I hate her.”
“Hate is a strong word.”
“I know.”
“She’s actually nice,” I said, shrugging.
“It’s all an act. She did it to Matthew once and she’s doing it again. Matthew is just too stupid to realize it,” Brandon said, rolling his eyes.
