Chapter 10 (Girl V.S. Boy)

I woke up when my phone started blaring The Energy by Audiovent right in my ear. I groaned, sitting up. What a great way to start the morning. I looked at the caller ID and saw it was Coach Reynolds. He had my number when we had to give him the list of phone numbers and addresses in case someone needed a ride to a game. “Hello?” I said into the phone, yawning.

“Hello Elle. I’m sorry, did I wake you?” Coach asked.

I checked the clock. It was almost lunch time. What would coach think if he saw that I just woke up at this time of day? “Er, no. I’m awake,” I lied.

Coach laughed. “Okay, well, I know this is kind of weird but my wife, Haley, and I couldn’t find anyone else and it’s kind of last minute.”

I frowned. “What’s up?”

“You see, Haley’s parents invited us out to dinner tonight but my daughter, Isabella, is sick so we can’t bring her. However, they really want to see us as we haven’t seen them in forever so can you babysit Isabella tonight from 7 to about 10 at night?” he asked, sounding desperate and a bit frazzled.

“Um, sure,” I said, needing something to do tonight.

“Great, I mean, this is great. Brandon usually babysits her if it’s a last minute thing as I think he is responsible enough but now that you are on the team, I think this will be good for you two to check out game strategies and work together as you are both great captains.”

My face fell. I would have to work with Brandon? “I’m sorry this is so last minute. I’m not pressuring you into this. If you had something else in mind, that’s okay,” Coach said.

At first, I contemplated whether or not I should go. I didn’t really want to face Brandon right now but at the same time, I would be a really big bitch if I passed up babysitting his daughter just because of some stupid boy drama. “No, its okay, I can do it,” I said.

“Thank you so much! Since this is so last minute, you and Brandon are both getting 20 bucks for babysitting. Do you need a ride to my house?” he asked.

“Nope, I’ll find my own ride. I know where your house is because of the call sheet,” I said.

“Okay, thanks again! You and Brandon are life savers! Come here at about 6:30 just to get the feel of things. Brandon knows where everything is so you can just follow his lead.”

I rolled my eyes. Oh, great. “Okay, I’m looking forward to it. Bye.”

I used to have a car. However, I have no idea how I got my license. I am a terrible driver! After multiple crashes and car totals, my dad banned me from driving ever again so now I get a ride everywhere I go. “I see it,” I said to my dad, pointing out the window.

My dad pulled into a driveway and I got out, right next to Brandon, who was also walking up. “Hey,” he said, kind of surprised.

I kept my face professional and unemotional. “Hi,” I said back politely.

We walked up together to the door as my dad drove away. Brandon rung the doorbell and we both waited awkwardly in the dark night, crickets stridulating in the background. Suddenly, Coach opened the door, dressed in formal wear. “Hey guys, thank you so much,” he said, stepping aside to let us in.
