Chapter 21 (Girl V.S. Boy)
At lunch that day, we all sat at a round table at this fancy French restaurant I couldn’t even pronounce the name of.
It was Matthew’s idea to go out as this was the first time we were all together in a long time and we needed to “celebrate”.
Rose didn’t come with us though, much to Brandon and Jacob’s relief. However, Matthew kept moaning about her. “She’s just so great, Brandon. She’s changed, man. I think she is here to stay,” Matthew said, grinning happily.
Brandon tried to look interested but failed. “Oh, I see,” he said unenthusiastically.
I have to admit; Brandon really had changed. Now he was at least making an effort to be happy and I think he was. “She’s awesome, dude. She’s great with Leah,” Matthew said, dreamily looking into space.
“Hey, so, Elle, where did you go on Sunday? You are making it sound like a big secret,” Janice said, leaning into my side.
I looked beside me to give Brandon a look and he responded, wanting desperately to stop Matthew from talking. “Actually, Ella and I went to visit my mom out of town,” Brandon said, just as our food arrived.
I had no idea what I ordered. I literally just picked the meal that my finger had landed on. “Wow, really? So, you guys are actually cool now?” Jacob asked.
I nodded, taking a bite out of my food. It tasted really great. Now, I wish I knew what it was. “Yeah, we are friends. No more of us bickering and hating each other.”
“Yup. And we are also planning to go on vacation on break. Are you guys in?” Brandon asked, popping some noodle looking thing into his mouth.
“Totally! Can Rose come?” Matthew asked.
Brandon and Jacob exchanged panicked looks, making Janice have to save them. “Actually, Matthew, wouldn’t we all want a little getaway with just the five of us? The original five? Come on, we’ve been fighting lots lately. I think we five all just need to relax,” she said, making the rest of us nod in agreement.
Matthew frowned. “You guys don’t want Rose to come.”
“No! No! That’s not what we meant. It’s just like what Janice said. Maybe we should just have a trip with the five of us. Then, maybe for summer break, Rose can come too,” I said, making Jacob and Brandon glare at me.
“You guys don’t like her. You think she’s the same,” Matthew grumbled.
“Matthew, man, we just don’t want to see you get hurt again,” Jacob said, putting a hand on Matthew’s shoulder.
Matthew sighed. “Whatever.”
The rest of the table got silent, just staring at a suddenly down Matthew. I cleared my throat, trying to break the tension. “So, what did I miss the past couple days?” I asked.
“Well, everyone asked where you guys were and everyone thought you guys got suspended for your little fight,” Janice said, laughing.
“One of us did,” Brandon said, raising his hand with a sheepish smile.
