Chapter 20 (Girl V.S. Boy)
“Stop it, Brandon… You are scaring me.”
“No, I’m serious!”
I sat, horrified, listening to the rustling sounds getting closer and louder. I held my breath, staring at Brandon for any change in his expression. Suddenly, it looked like he was startled, making me jump for a second. Then, he looked confused.
I frowned, looking behind me to see what he was looking at. I jumped too, as the homeless guy behind me came closer.
I gulped, staring at the messy and unkempt man. He was bald with a scruffy small, gray beard. He looked elderly, making me feel sorry for him. Especially since he was homeless in the middle of nowhere.
I looked back to Brandon, who just stared at the man with a blank face. I turned back to the homeless guy, who looked scared as well, as if we were going to hurt him. “Would you like some food?” Brandon asked suddenly.
I looked back to Brandon, with a shocked face. I wasn’t shocked that he offered the man food but I was shocked that Brandon could be this kind. It was all new to me.
The homeless guy looked shocked as well but nodded. “Please,” he managed to say in a weak voice.
Brandon grinned and stood up from his chair. “Okay, I’ll be right back. Ella, keep him company for a while. You can sit in my chair if you want!” Brandon said, running back inside the house.
Now I kind of felt uncomfortable. Was this a trick? Had Brandon purposely left me here by myself with this man?
The man just stood there, unsure of what to do. Finally, I smiled the tiniest bit. “You can sit down,” I said, gesturing towards Brandon’s now vacant chair.
The man once again looked shocked. I smiled wider. “It’s okay. You can sit here while he comes back with food,” I said, putting on my friendliest tone to make him feel welcome.
The man hesitated for a moment before slowly and weakly taking a seat. “I-is this a trick?” the man sputtered out.
I felt bad. This poor man thought we were tricking him. Brandon better not. “No, I promise. We are helping you. We are going to get you fed, okay?” I reassured him with a smile.
“O-okay,” the man stuttered, using all of the energy he had left to just even smile.
Several minutes later, Brandon came back, holding a bowl. “Mmm, yummy, yummy! I hope you like microwave made mashed potatoes with melted cheddar cheese on top!” he said, giving the bowl to the homeless man.
“T-thank you,” the man said, blowing on the food.
“Crap, I forgot to get you a drink!” Brandon said, hitting his forehead with his hand.
“I’ll get it,” I said with a smile, getting up from my chair. “What would you like to drink? We have water, all kinds of soda, juice?”
“Water, please,” the man said quietly, a small smile on his face.
I grinned and went back inside the house to retrieve water. I opened up the fridge and got out a water bottle when someone spoke up beside me. “What are you up to?”
I jumped up, coming face to face with Karen, who had an amused smile on her face. “Umm…” I said, not wanting to get in trouble.
Karen chuckled. “Relax. I’m just getting a late night snack, too. Are you hungry?” she asked, as we moved away from the fridge.
