Chapter 5 (Girl V.S. Boy)

“Mr. Crawford!” the choir teacher, Mrs. Gage, bellowed.

Reed looked up. “Yeah?” he asked.

“Where is your uniform, young man?” Mrs. Gage asked, narrowing her eyes at him.

Janice and I watched the encounter carefully to see how Reed would act. Was he passive, assertive, or aggressive?

“It got dirty,” he said quietly.

“Then, you should be wearing your gym clothes! What did you tell your other teachers before me?” Mrs. Gage said, frowning.

“I didn’t. I messed up my uniform on my way here.”

“Then go and change!” Mrs. Gage said, shaking her head.

Reed nodded, getting up with a sigh. “Yes, ma’am,” he muttered before walking out.

“What a fine ass,” Janice said dreamily as she watched him, making me laugh.

“So, he’s passive… Is that a good thing or not?” I asked. Janice shrugged. “Well, if you guys ever dated, he would probably never cheat on you because he’s scared of you but unless you want a man in control, then no,” she said, frowning.

I frowned, thinking. “I’ll talk to him.”

“Okay class, just a little information before we start; Hello, my name is Mrs. Gage. I am the head of the theater arts department here! Here in choir, we don’t do the regular choir songs much; we do much better things!” Mrs. Gage announced, passing out papers.

I looked at the paper we got. “Dog Days Are Over,” I said with a smirk.

“Are we copying Glee?” someone asked on the other side of the room.

Mrs. Gage chuckled. “Well, I guess you can say so since Glee doesn’t do much choir songs either. We are going to perform this at the assembly in a week so we better practice. There are solos in this song but only two people will get it. The rest of you will sing the chorus and back up. Who would like to sing the solos?”

Janice raised her arm and raised my arm for me too. “We do, Mrs. Gage!”

My eyes widened just as Reed came back. “Ahh, Mr. Crawford, let’s not make this a habit, okay? Here you go,” she said, handing him some lyrics.

“Okay, so we have Ms. Dela Cruz and Ms. Perry for solos,” Mrs. Gage said, writing our names down on a piece of paper.

Janice smiled, satisfied as I hit her in the arm. “What the hell?” I whispered.

“I wanted to get the solo. I love to sing,” she said, shrugging.

“You didn’t have to drag me into it!” I said, frowning.

“Yeah, but you’re my friend and I wanted someone who I can work with for solos,” she said, smiling.

I sighed. “I suppose,” I said.

As we walked out of choir, Janice spotted Reed and walked up to him. “Hey!” she chirped with a grin.

I raised an eyebrow as he looked at her. “Uh, hey?”

“Here, I’m going to replace myself with my friend Elle because she wants to talk to you,” she said, dragging me beside Reed as she fell back into the crowd.
