It was a lovely day in Salem, as I walked home from cleaning Reverend Samuel's home, same as every day. As I walked through the town on the way to my little shack at the edge of the woods I listened to what the townsfolk had to say today "so sad to see such beauty wasted on that odd girl" "that whore mother of hers keeps her and her sister hidden away for good reason" "hear anything interesting sol?" This direct thought caught me off guard for a second and I quickly looked around, there I spotted my lovely sister Zelena skipping up to me as it seemed she had just finished cleaning another member of the church's home at the same time as me. She linked arms with me as we continued up the path to our home when Zelena spoke aloud " you know Sol it's not very polite to read people's thoughts without permission" I let out a little laugh "yeah well how else am I to get the town gossip? It's not as if I have any friends" I looked into Zelena's honey brown eyes and watched her sparkle dim a bit as I said that. "Well maybe we would have friends if mother didn't insist on hiding us at the edge of town, everyone thinks we are freaks Solstice." she said sadly. I pulled her closer to me and squeezed her a bit. "You know she's just trying to protect us' ' I almost whispered because I knew this was a sore subject for Zel.

We arrived shortly after and Zelena went straight to her room, without another word. It was understandable as our little walk home had turned sour at the end, it was an ongoing argument in our home. Zelena wanted to live proudly and freely, not hidden away from everyone, it was a wonder we were allowed to enter the town at all, but I convinced my mother it was more suspicious to hide in the woods, the townsfolk would grow uncomfortable. Well more uncomfortable. My mother of course couldn't go in and out of the town as she pleased because they definitely would find it amiss that she hasn't aged a day since she settled in the little shack in the woods, over 18 years ago. She was supposed to be 60 years old yet she didn't look a day over 30, of course, neither age is actually accurate; My mother was somewhere closer to 200 years old. That being said, if anyone asks where Verena Noble is Zel and I always just say she's a lot more tired and weak in her old age so we have no problem working to take care of her.

"Mama! Where are you?" I yell when I get inside. "Solstice darling come to the cellar" I hear her sweet voice call from downstairs. I see her sitting at the altar that has been in our cellar for as long as I can remember. Although my mother doesn't allow me to read her mind I sense fear for a second before she floods my senses with love and positive feelings, although I appreciate the gesture I know she's overloading my senses so I don't find out what she's worried about. Other than immortality my mother has no additional gifts, her blocking my telepathy simply comes from years of meditation and practice. Along with telepathy I also have the gift of healing, my sister is also gifted she can control the elements. Our mother has always told us that our gifts are a part of our destiny and that the universe chose us for a reason. Part of me wants to believe her, I find my chest aching for something more often but for what I don't know. I don't see what else there is besides this repetitive quiet life we live, in hiding. I would never argue with my mother. I sense her anguish when she tells us she's just trying to protect us, I know she's right when she says we wouldn't be accepted for who we are so we have to hide. But on the other hand, I long for more just like Zel does, she's just more outspoken about it.

Before I realize it I've zoned out and my mother is in front of me. "Solstice, are you okay my Tanoma?" I loved when my mother spoke in her native language. "Yes mama, just tired from today's endeavors, that's all. Are you okay? I sense that something burdens you"

she smiled at me softly "I think it's time I tell you and Zelena a little story.
