8 months passed and although the Noble family managed to evade accusations of witchcraft the same couldn't be said about other women in the town. The church went on a crusade, killing women accused of witchcraft in the cruelest ways. The worst part is they were all innocent, anyone could accuse a woman of witchcraft for whatever petty reason. The church didn't ask for evidence they just murdered. Our family said nothing we continued to hide, my mother stayed at the altar in the cellar doing protection spells to try to keep the town off our backs. Every day on our walks home from cleaning Zel and I watched a woman accused die horrifically, they held the murders in the middle of the square as if it was some sort of entertainment. Every day we witnessed these atrocities. I felt my sister's anger grow, her thoughts turning darker, her light fading. There was nothing I could say to change that, for I felt the same way.
We came home after work smelling of burnt humans, we witnessed innocent women burned alive because they were caught reading and talking about the stars. This pushed Zelena over the edge. "Mother, we can't just stand idly as these monsters kill innocent women! It's us they are looking for, we have the power to stop them so why do we hide? Was it not you that taught us from the beginning to be strong yet here we are pretending to be weaker when we are not! It's pathetic, we were destined for more. Did the universe not give us these gifts to stand up to the same type of weak-minded sheep who drove you from your home and your people?" Everything she said was true. I knew it, she looked to me for support but I stayed silent, but unlike her I was scared. I said nothing and I felt her disappointment. She felt I betrayed her at that moment. My mother also stayed silent, she just went back to the cellar without another word. This angered Zel and she stomped off yet again full of anger.
Today was different, Zelena was trying to block me from her mind but I could sense something emanating from her. It was fury. As we were stopped in the square yet again to watch innocent women burn the sky became impossibly dark, and thunder clapped. The crowd was horrified as they started yelling "The witches are trying to escape the stake, the devil can not protect them from the Holy fire" right as they tried to light a fire under the poor women it dissipated, Reverend Parris was stunned. Panic began to set in as I looked to my left and saw Zelena was behind this. I whispered harshly "Zel please stop, they will know it's you" Yet again Reverend Parris lit the flame and went to burn when the sky began to downpour a nonstop freezing cold rain. Now I grabbed Zelena and pulled her "Come now before they start to kill every woman in sight Zel, please! That is enough you have made your point." Her eyes pierced me like daggers "It's not enough and I won't stop until they pay" Now I was angry I felt an energy surge within me as I said "Enough Zelena come with me now, I won't ask again" Her eyes went hazy and without another word, she complied. I couldn't understand her change of heart and neither could she as she snapped out of whatever trance she was in and said "what the hell did you do Sol, I wasn't finished" I was confused but I answered firmly "Mind your tongue when you speak to me sister and yes you were certainly done! Your rash actions could have gotten us killed" she just lowered her head and softly answered "I couldn't let them kill anyone else, I'm sorry I know it was dangerous. But are you not sick of what's happening?" I sighed "Of course I am, If I had your bravery and strength surely I'd fight too, but I don't. The truth is I'm scared, I'm a coward. Here you are a mere 13 years and you are stronger than I could ever be. I am proud that you want to be a hero but as your older sister, I just want to protect you. I love you and could not bear to lose you, so please do not think I am against you.
I just can't lose you.
