Months passed after mother told us her story, and we went out even less than we did before, only leaving the house when we went to clean houses for little coin so that the townsfolk wouldn't think we were up to anything. Things went smoothly for those months, we lived our repetitive insignificant lives quietly. Until January of 1692, that's when I began to hear rumors of witches.

This morning was not unlike the others. I walked to Reverend Samuel Parris' home to clean it, when I entered the home to clean it I saw that the town's doctor was there checking on the children of the house. I kept my head down and tried to stay out of their way but I tuned into what they were thinking, the atmosphere was dark and I felt something was amiss. " This behavior is not normal, this has to be the work of Satan, His whores are at work in our town." This thought from the doctor left me more confused. He then went to Reverend Parris and told him his theory. One word came to the reverend's mind: "Witches".

My stomach was in knots, I had to tell mother. I quickly fulfilled my duties and was getting ready when the Reverend stopped me and said "Solstice, don't forget your payment" I quickly answered, "oh of course how thoughtless of me, apologies Reverend" he waved my statement away "No need to apologize, just making sure you are compensated as I know you need the coin to support your mother yes?" I nod my head cautiously and go to walk out when he says one last thing to me "Child, be weary there is a great evil manifesting here in Salem, and the church will make sure it is burned by the fire of Christ" With that, I quickly made haste home. Although he was warning me to be careful, why did it feel like a threat?

"Witches? Are you sure that's what you heard Solstice?" I nodded frantically, "Yes mama there is talk of witches in town, it's a matter of time before they pick us out as outsiders and decide that's enough to condemn us, after all, I know how they all truly feel about us. We cannot let them catch us off guard."

My sister added "Sol is right mama we must act before they do" My mom has a pensive look on her face before she speaks "If we act, we are confessing. They have no reason to suspect us, we have done nothing wrong." Zelena let out a frustrated grunt and spoke again "They already hate us. This is the perfect way for them to get rid of us, can't you see mama they are just like the Spaniards trying to force us to assimilate, taking away our free will. Why stay under their heels?" Mother reaches out for our hands and speaks to us once more "We stay quiet, we are not prepared to take on a whole town. We do not initiate, we adapt and act normal. That's how we will survive and that is final."

Now Zelena is fired up "But mom! Once again you are choosing to hide. How that is what the universe intended?!" I felt my mother's frustration building so now I interjected " Zel enough! This cannot be an easy decision for mother to make but she is trying to protect us. All we have is each other. Let's not let these bigots tear us apart from the inside." Suddenly the room grows extremely cold with frost creeping up the walls and I know Zel is overflowing with anger and her powers are manifesting it. "Control yourself please, that is the type of behavior that could get us killed" with that she storms out the back door into the garden. I sigh and place my head between my hands, and I feel my mother's hand on my back. "Just give her time, she's just a child she can't possibly understand the gravity of the situation."

and she's right Zel is only 13 why should she have to bear such a burden.
