Four years ago Rodger was concerned about Parker. He feared that the boy was headed in the same direction as his siblings and wanted to do anything that avoid that. He was not going to let him mess up his like they did.
No he was going to be better than them. He was not going to be a high school drop out, parent before eighteem with a dead end job, and in a toxic relationship with an equally useless partner.
No he was going to be different. He was going to do something with his life.
He was just not sure how he was going to go about it.
All he knew was that he had to do something drastic and he had to do it quick.
And then he met Silas Mayhew. He was a new salesman at the dealership. He was married with three boys from aged ten to sixteen. When he met them he was shocked at how well behaved boys. He thought how they had to be three kids he had ever seen.
Rodger had to admit he was a little jealous at how well they listened to him. They sat when told to sit,, were quiet when told be quiet, stood when told to stand. Without any debate or protest.
He could never imagine his kids by that compliant.
Rodger was desperate to know his secret.
So what night after work he invited him out for drinks. The two sat down at the local bar and he grilled him about his child rearing techniques.
Silas told him how he set boundaries for his boys at a young age and used corporal punishment to enforce them. He had to admit the idea of spanking Parker at first repelled him but as he thought about he could not deny the
results with his boys. And four years he was grateful for the advice that he had given. It was not easy but Parker was a good kid with a bright future thanks to him.
Rodger could not help but feel indebted to him. And a year ago he told Silas if there was anyway he could repay him to let him know.
And that Sunday night he came to collect.
Rodger and Parker were sitting silent when there was a knock at the door. "That better not be Todd again." He said in an agitated tone as he stood up. "If it is I'm going to lose all sympathy for him."
I hope its not him then Parker thought.
Rodger walked to the door ready to send Todd packing if it was him. I'll tell him not even to bother to show up for work because he is done. I'll mail his stuff to him.
Rodger opened the door and blinked when he saw who it was on the other side. "Silas?" He then noticed his middle son standing behind him. "Carson?"
"Hello Rodger." Forty five year old Silas Mayhew said. He stood five eleven, had graying brown hair and hazel eyes.
The two shook hands.
"Hello Mister Cole." The eighteen old boy said. He stood six one, was muscular framed and had thick curly hair. He too had hazel eyes and angular face like his father.
The boy stuck his hand out and grasped Rodger's firmly.
"May we come in?" Silas asked.
"Of course." He stepped aside allowing the two in.
Parker stood to his feet to greet them.
"Hello Mister Mayhew, Hello Carson." Parker said.
"Hello Parker." Silas said as he shook his hand. "How are you son?"
"Fine sir." Parker replied. Except for getting wiped twice, grounded and then grounded again and having my mouth washed out with soap. And also finding out that my dad had neglect to tell me that he was dating someone and playing daddy to her kid.
