It was after one o'clock when Melinda walked into the law offices of Howard, Fine, and Besser where Calvin worked as a junior partner. A very junior partner who had no hope of ever becoming senior partner.
Which was sad considering that he has slaved away for the firm for the past twenty three years.
As she walked in she eyed the office of the partner who handled divorces. She wondered if it would be crass to go in and talk to him about the possible dissolution of their marriage.
Not that I want to end our marriage, I really don't. I love Calvin I really but if he does not stop acting like an idiot he will leave me no choice.
She walked to were the junior partner offices were. And said hi to the thirty something secretary that Calvin shared with three junior associates instead of having one of his own like the other junior partners.
And the senior associates who will probably see senior partner before he ever does.
The secretary informed her that he was in and she walked into his cramped, windowless office which seemed more like a closet to her. She thought how associates had a bigger office. True they were to an office but it was still bigger than his tiny office.
When she walked in Calvin was sitting at his desk about to shove Philly cheesesteak sub that was dropping with mayo and mustard into his mouth. "Eating healthy see I see."
Calvin gave her an annoyed look and sat the sub on a paper plate. "Melinda." He said giving her a look of indifference. "What do I owe the pleasure of this visit?"
Despite the mask of indifference that he was wearing she could tell her visit was not a pleasure for him. Actually he was quite annoyed with her presence.
"I wanted to see of you were done acting like a pouting child and ready to come home." Melinda said as she sat across from him.
"I'm not a child Melinda."
"Well you're behaving like one " Melinda said. "I mean its sad when our three year old is acting more mature than you."
"Is this how you plan on getting me to come home by walking into my office and insulting me." Calvin said. "I would rethink my strategy if I were you."
"Well I would like to use to reason to get you to come home but I know that would be a futile endeavor."
"Why should I come home?" Calvin said. "You made it pretty clear that what happens with our kids is none of my business."
"I never said that Calvin." Melinda said dismissively. "Of course what with our kids is your business."
"Really?" He said. "Tell me what was going on with Christine Friday night. Why was she so upset?"
"Not this again." She said with heavy sigh. "Can't you just drop it?"
"No, I can't." Calvin replied. "She's my daughter and I have a right to know why she was so upset."
"She told you why she was upset." Melinda said. "Parker got in trouble."
"For what?" Calvin asked.
"Well that is between his father and him isn't it." Melinda said. "And none of your concern."
"Its my concern when it affects my daughter." Calvin said. "There is something that you are not telling me and I want to know what it is." He looked at her with a steely gaze. "I have right to know."
She sighed once wondering why he could not just drop it like she wanted him to? Why did he have to be so pigheaded?
Men are such babies when they don't get their way she mused.
