Chapter Thirty Eight - Shane

2050

The school alerted my parents by text on the evening of the fire that the school would be closed for the following two days, in order for there to be an investigation into the cause of the incident.

I woke up on Tuesday morning, after a mere few hours of sleep, and felt the urge to text Kaitlyn. However, something stopped me. I needed her to text me first, just so that I was reassured that she was thinking of me. Pathetic, I know.

I rolled over in my bed and stared at my mobile phone, in its usual position on my bedside table. I pictured handling it and maneuvering my fingers across the keyboard, typing a message to Kaitlyn, but I refused to give in to temptation. Letting out a frustrated groan, I buried my head into my pillow and tried to think of something else, anything else.

My mind wandered to the events of the day before, the moment where I was tempted to kiss Kaitlyn, where I so almost did and where she looked like she would let me. It was hopeless. I couldn't stop thinking about her. I couldn't stop myself from imagining what might have happened if her phone call hadn't interrupted us.

My phone vibrated and I've never moved so quickly in my life. I grabbed my phone at a speed I wasn't even aware that I was capable of. I unlocked my phone. I clicked the little envelope icon. I read the message. My heart sank. It was a text from orange, telling me that my allowances had been updated. "Thanks orange, thanks a bunch for your perfect timing." I said sarcastically. "Wow, I'm even talking to myself, I must be going mad."

I looked at the time on my phone, half 6, oh. That might explain why Kaitlyn hadn't texted me. "She's probably asleep. That, or she doesn't want to text me." I thought.

Just as I was thinking this, my phone vibrated again. Not quite as fast as before, I reached for my phone and hesitantly unlocked it, preparing myself for it to be another text from orange. To my surprise, it was from Kaitlyn. "Are you awake?" It read. Checking the time again, I realised it was still only 6:32.

"What are you doing awake this early?" I replied.

"So you are awake then?"

"No, I'm texting you in my sleep ;)" I joked.

"You never know. How come you're awake?" She questioned.

"Just struggled to get back to sleep really."

"Sorry, I hope I'm not keeping you up."

"No it's okay, I was waiting for an excuse to text you anyway :)"

I didn't even hesitate before admitting that. She had the power to make me admit anything, without even trying. "God, she's so bloody... I can't even think of a word that fits." I thought to myself.

"I bet you say that to every girl who texts you in the early hours of the morning."

"How much are you betting?"

"A fiver." She replied quickly.

"Well you owe me a fiver then because you're the only girl that I recall ever texting me this early in the morning."

"Well if I'm the only one then technically I am all the girls that text you this early."

"Oh damnit you smart a**."

"I win, you owe me a fiver. :P" She responded, clearly very proud of herself. I always thought she had a hint of competitiveness.

"Looks like you're gonna have to wait for this £5 though, school's out for two days."
