Chapter Seventeen - Kaitlyn

2050

I must have walked super fast to the zebra crossing because I arrived ten minutes early. I leant against the wall and listened to the birds singing as they flew from tree to tree.

I imagined what I would do if I could fly, would I escape from this place where people think I'm an acquaintance of the devil? Where would I go if I had the chance to make a fresh start?

I must have been daydreaming about it for quite a while because before long, Shane was walking along the crossing towards me.

His perfect curls were almost bouncing with every step and his slight smile sent butterflies crazy in the pit of my stomach. And that's when it hit me; I'd travel anywhere, as long as I was with him. Being with Shane was like being home.

I know that must sound crazy, after all I had barely known him for five minutes, but I just knew that his smile could make any place home.

"So you've forgiven me then?" He asked, wearing a cheeky grin.

"That depends what you've got in the basket." I joked. He laughed, a genuine laugh, one that made me laugh too.

"Only the best for you, your royal highness," He continued to joke, "Sandwiches and a bunch of sugary snacks, I do hope one is most pleased." His attempt at a posh accent was hilarious and I couldn't help but let out a chuckle.

He gestured for me to link arms with him and I did, his touch sending nervous shivers down my spine. I didn't know where we were heading but that was fine with me.

After a fifteen minute stroll, we reached some sort of field. It must have been part of a farm because there were a few sheep munching on the grass there.

"Is this our destination?" I asked.

"I suppose so."

"You suppose so?"

"If it's okay, we can find somewhere else if it's not?" For the first time today, his confident façade collapsed and I saw someone underneath who was desperate for my approval, but after a split second the façade was back up.

"I love it," I assured him, "It's perfect."

"Really?"

"Of course."

He smiled sweetly, seemingly pleased that he made the right decision.

I really did love it there, it was so tranquil, we weren't far from the busy roads but it felt like we were a million miles away.

"The grass is a bit overgrown so you'll have to be careful where you step." He warned.

"You sound like you come here often?"

"Is that a question or a statement?" He asked, smiling.

"Umm... A question, I guess."

"I've been here once before, it was the day before I first saw you." He looked at me then, really looked at me. As if he was trying to figure out something but I couldn't quite tell what.

I think I must have blushed because I felt some heat rush to my cheeks and he looked away.

"Did you come with your family?" I asked, intrigued, as he set down the picnic blanket.

"Here? On the day before I first saw you?"

"Yeah." I replied.

"No, I was wandering around outside the school alone to see what it was like and I guess I just felt like going on a little adventure." He explained, gesturing for me to join him on the blanket as he emptied out the contents of the basket.
