Chapter Sixty Six - The Aftermath
2053
Kaitlyn and Shane were sat on a hill overlooking the derelict villages. This was a view they knew well; they visited that exact spot every year on the anniversary of her Dad's death. In the distance they could make out all eight of the villages that Hector and his crew constructed. There was no movement in them now, except for the occasional bit of litter. Shane's arm rested on Kaitlyn's shoulders, as a gentle breeze flew through her hair, and through the wild grass.
It didn't take much to convince Hector to tell the police everything, they just had to give them their word that his name would not be mentioned publicly. At first they must have thought he was bonkers, but they couldn't ignore such a serious confession. Once he took them to the villages, they had no choice but to believe him. It wasn't difficult to find out which members of the government were behind the scheme, and all those involved were sent to high security prisons. When the public found out, they were understandably horrified. The fact that the people in charge of their country were capable of such monstrosities threw the country into chaos. This, however, was only temporary. As Kaitlyn and Shane sat silently on the hill, they thought of how grateful they were that their identities were also kept anonymous. All those released from the villages must be settling into their new lives now, but it was difficult to believe that they would have fully recovered.
It was hard to fathom how such a project could have been kept secret for so long, especially considering the impressive size of the villages. They had walked through them together once, they weren't supposed to but they managed to get in. The security wasn't exactly what it used to be while it was still running. The first village they visited was the one Shane had grown up in until being kidnapped for the experiments. The first thing they saw was the formidable building where the lab was hidden, it sent shivers down both of their spines. Shane even thought he could make out his blood stain still remaining on one of the windowsills. He then traced the roof and remembered the escape route he had taken with his Dad, before he even saw him as a father.
The next village they visited was the one where they had met, Kaitlyn found that being there brought some memories back, but Shane had to fill in the rest. They even went into the school they had attended, and thought back to when they found the old school photographs and first discovered something was wrong. The atmosphere practically dripped with corruption and lies, it would have been too much to bear had they not been beside someone they knew to be honest and true.
You may wonder why they would return here every year, to such a despicable place. But to them, as despicable as it was, it represented everything they had been through. And by returning there together, they could look at each other and see that they had hope. Whatever the future held, they could face it together, and together they could get through anything.
They were meant to be Generation Infinosil. But corruption had failed in the face of courage and hope. Instead, only one person had that power surging through his veins - Shane. And he could be trusted to keep it safe.
The sun was setting over the villages, and Kaitlyn and Shane rose from their spot to make their way home, together.
