Chapter Forty Two - Kaitlyn

2050

I wanted his soft, perfect lips and strong, muscular arms to be mine forever. I was lost in the moment and I didn't want it to end. Unfortunately, it had to end at some point and when it did, I had to fight the urge to kiss him again. He was still ever so close to me, our noses almost touching and our bodies pressed against each other.

"I need to tell you something, but I'm worried it might scare you away." He whispered.

"What is it?" I asked, worried.

"I know you might think it's too soon, I know we've only known each other for a little while but I feel like I've known you forever, I feel like you're the only one who really understands how my brain works, maybe even more than I know myself. You might doubt it but I just know it's true, I..."

"Shane?" I interrupted.

"Yeah?"

"Stop blabbering, I love you too." I said, with surprising ease as if I'd been saying it every day for years and with a grin as wide as the grin of the Cheshire cat.

Shane let out a sigh of relief, as if he'd been holding his breath for an eternity. "You... You feel the same?"

"Of course I do, I think you're the most complicated and frustrating person I know, but you're also the most amazing and... I feel at home when I'm with you, I feel like I belong with you, like we were meant to be together. I know that sounds cheesy and maybe slightly cliché but all those romance films and love songs suddenly make sense now. I can't describe it, it's... It's just... Beautiful." I explained.

"Now who's blabbering?" Shane asked, winking.

"Oh shut up!" I responded, laughing and gently shoving him in the chest. When I looked up, he was looking down at me with a peaceful smile, apparently unphased by my playful attack. He kissed me on the forehead and wrapped his arms around me, squeezing me tightly and sighing a sigh that said "I've been waiting for this forever."

"I need to show you something Shane."

"What is it?" He asked and, apparently noticing my concern, asked, "what's wrong?"

"I found something." I said, as I led Shane upstairs to my room, to the shoebox. "You know the fire?"

"The one at our school?" Shane questioned.

"Yeah," I replied, "I think I saw someone, in the smoke, someone who doesn't go to our school."

"Are you saying that you think you saw who did it? You think it wasn't an accident?" Shane asked, worry spreading thickly across his face.

"I... I don't know, but why would they be there otherwise?"

"Why didn't you tell anyone Kaitlyn? This is really serious."

"Because I thought I was seeing things, but then I found this." I said, picking up the drawing of a man in black and showing it to him.

"I don't get it, it's just a child's drawing."

"It's my drawing, from years ago, and it reminded me of our argument." I started to explain.

"How does this have anything to do with our argument?"

"Not our argument exactly, but something that happened after. I went back to the field, the one where we had our picnic, and someone... I think someone was watching me. Someone who wore clothes that looked exactly like the ones in this drawing, and exactly like the ones on the man I saw by the fire."
