Chapter Sixty Three - Shane
2050
"How did you find us?" My Dad demanded.
"Didn't you know about the tracking devices we had inserted into all the children?" The vile man asked rhetorically.
"Tracking devices? What the hell is going on?" Kaitlyn shouted, distressed.
"Well, you escaped before we had them inserted into the girls, so you don't have one but your precious boyfriend does, so I guess he led us to you too, how unfortunate for you. It made our job a lot easier."
"What are you talking about?" I questioned, desperate to understand what was going on. Through all of this my parents were just sat there sheepishly, whereas Kaitlyn's mum was more concerned about keeping her husband awake.
"Let me see, do you have any unexplained scars, say, on your side?" Our captor said, an evil grin on his face.
Kaitlyn's face went white, she was clearly thinking of the scar she had seen above my hip whilst we were in her room. The scar she had once kissed and called unique, saying it was part of my story, now had an entirely new meaning. It was as if this somehow finally confirmed that this chaos was all real.
"You're good actors, pretending you don't know what's going on, but you can drop the act now."
"They both lost their memories in the accident." My Dad explained.
"Well it wasn't exactly an accident, was it? But how mightily convenient that must have been for you, I bet that made it a little easier to keep them apart, well, temporarily anyway, it wasn't exactly a permanent resolution." He laughed, gesturing towards us.
"Convenient? You think it was convenient? Our own children couldn't remember who we were." My Mum snapped back.
"Yet you still managed to use it to your advantage and kept them apart like you wanted."
"Why would you want to keep us apart? I don't understand." I asked, horrified, this meant it was true, they had lied to us.
"You have to understand, our top priority was to keep you both safe, we thought that they would be more likely to find us if you were together, so we split up." My Dad explained.
"We didn't want to tell you about each other because you'd be upset that you had to be apart. We thought it would be better if you didn't know about each other, you couldn't miss what you didn't know. Obviously that was the wrong decision." My Mum explained further, looking ashamed.
"Clearly though, your plan didn't work, and it just meant your children weren't even aware someone was after you all, so they didn't even warn you when strange things started happening, and look where we are now." Our captor was loving my parents' regret.
"Strange things like what?" Kaitlyn asked.
"Hmm... Like the mysterious fire at your school, yeah one of my men had to be punished for that, they chose the wrong bloody classroom."
"Why now? If you had a tracking device on me, why did you wait until now to find us again?" I questioned.
"Well, that's one mistake I will take responsibility for. You see, you were so bashed up after we had you run over that we just assumed you were dead, no normal person could survive that damage. We had no idea you were still alive until some other fool recently tried to escape and we had to use the tracking system again for the first time since your escape. Don't worry, we caught him, he won't be causing any more trouble." He shrugged, attempting to minimise the stupidity of his mistake.
That's when Kaitlyn's mum gasped because Kaitlyn's dad now had his head resting lifelessly on his lap, and he wasn't responding to her frantic shaking. "He needs to go to the hospital immediately!" I shouted.
"Please, he's dying!" Kaitlyn screamed.
"What difference does it make? I'm going to kill you all anyway. I just wanted a bit of fun first, I've had a long time to think about what I would do to you when - " He didn't finish his sentence, as I had grabbed the closest tool discarded on the floor and whacked him around the head with it before he could react. Blood spilled out of the fresh gash in his head, but it wasn't enough to knock him out. I raised the wrench to try again, but he had regained his composure and was pointing a gun right at my head.
He pulled the trigger.
I fell into blackness.
