Chapter Forty Three

2041

Paul and Jamie had been in their embrace for a mere few moments before they heard raised voices ahead of them.

"This is it," Jamie panicked," This is it, they've found us. They've found us and they're gonna kill us."

"Shh, be quiet." Paul whispered, pressing a dirty, splintered finger onto Jamie's chapped, dry lips.

Jamie immediately stopped speaking, but his quick, panicked breaths were escaping his lungs at an unsafe volume. They had to get away from here, and fast.

"Jamie, you can climb trees, right? A smart boy like you?" Paul asked, still whispering.

"Uh... Y-y-yeah." Jamie stuttered.

"Okay, good. I want you to climb as high as you can before the branches get too weak to hold you." Paul insisted.

Jamie was rooted to the spot, frozen in fear.

"Jamie, snap out of it, you need to go. Now!" Paul demanded, sounding firm despite the fact that he was whispering. The sense of urgency in Paul's voice seemed to pull Jamie together a bit. He sprinted to the nearest tree and scrambled up it, luckily there were many thick branches on the way up to aid him. Eventually, Paul lost sight of Jamie, which was good because it meant that he was well hidden.

Paul knelt down amongst the foliage, waiting for any sign of an enemy. When he heard nothing, he began to creep forward, closer and closer to where he believed the noise stemmed from. It wasn't long before he came across a high, metal fence. "Great," he thought, "how are we supposed to get over this?" He looked left and right and it soon became apparent that the fence stretched for as far as Paul could see.

Then Paul saw something to his far right on the other side of the fence. A crowd of perhaps one hundred people were being filtered into the rejuvenation's territory. "If there's a way in then there's a way out." Paul thought.

He had a plan, but it was risky.
