Chapter Sixty One - Shane

2050

I ran up to Kaitlyn's dad, who was lying on the floor, drifting in and out of consciousness. Beside me I heard Kaitlyn gasp and she immediately bent down to shake her dad awake.

'Dad! Dad, wake up!' She shouted.

'Kaitlyn... Is that you?' He asked quietly, I couldn't quite tell where the blood was coming from but it looked like he had a wound to his side. The blood was pooling around him, I didn't want to imagine how much blood he had lost.

'Yeah, it's me Dad. I'm here, you're gonna be okay.' She said, putting pressure on the wound. Then his eyes, on his ghostly pale face, widened when they landed on me, 'Shane? Is that you, after all these years? Take Kaitlyn with you and run, please, take care of her...'

'What are you talking about? We're not going to leave you here, I'll call the ambulance and you'll be alright, you hear me?'

As soon as I reached for my phone I heard a wicked male voice commanding, 'you will do no such thing. No ambulances. No police.'

Slowly I turned my head to see a man all in black, a colour that was starting to fill me with dread. In his hand was a bloodied knife and it was hovering dangerously close to Kaitlyn's Mum's neck.

Kaitlyn was worryingly silent, the only sound from her direction was her shallow breaths.

'What is going on?' I asked the intruder, even though I was fairly certain this wasn't all a coincidence.

'I'll tell you what's going on. We've been looking for you for long enough, and you're not getting away this time.' The man's vile voice dripped with poison.

'Looking for us? Why?' Kaitlyn asked, the first words she had uttered since the sight of her Mum, who was now whimpering due to the man's tight grip on her hair.

'Don't play innocent with me girl.'

'What are you talking about? Tell me what's going on.' She demanded fiercely.

'Don't tell me you don't remember, you were old enough to remember.' He said, trying to hide his confusion.

'Remember what?' I asked.

'To remember when we ran you both over, jeez, you'd think that would be a prominent memory.'

'That was you?' Kaitlyn and I both stammered, shocked.

'But why?' I asked.

'Oh shut up. I've had enough of your questions. Right now you're going to go out of your back door and into the van outside. Both of you. Now.'

'This man needs medical help.' I pleaded, 'he's lost too much blood.'

'Oh like I care, get in the van or she gets her throat slit.' He threatened, gripping onto her hair even tighter.

So I helped Kaitlyn's dad to his feet, and seeing no other alternative in which Kaitlyn's mum survived, led him and Kaitlyn to the van. He gestured for us to get in the back and, before we had time to run, threw Kaitlyn's mum in with us and slammed the door.

We were in total darkness.
