Chapter Twelve

2038

Scaffolding. Scaffolding everywhere.

Hector observed his surroundings, in every direction buildings were being constructed; a school over here, a cafe over there, dozens of flats and shops, even a church and mosque side by side in the center.

The plan was for this new, private village to be set up, as realistically as possible and as quickly as possible. So far so good. The building was coming along nicely, the families were staying in temporary caravans, until more permanent accommodation could be arranged for them. They seemed pretty convinced when the rejuvenation explained that the government had needed some people to volunteer for their "very worthy cause", and that the rejuvenation had seriously misunderstood the command and gathered them up by force.

Of course there were a few trouble makers, but they were dealt with by ensuring that they worked as cleaners in the labs. That way, Hector could keep an eye on them at all times.

The families were promised a secure and stable environment with no money worries and a fresh start at life, but only in return for their co-operation.

Most families jumped at the opportunity, they were taken from neighbourhoods that were known for money problems on purpose. Because of this, there was a larger group of people who were willing to take part.

Although Hector obviously prefered the idea of forcing people into co-operation, he couldn't deny that this plan did seem to be working pretty well.
