Chapter Fifty Seven
2043
Jane was horrified to hear about everything Robert and Shane had gone through, and horrified by their suspicions of what may have happened to her mother. It broke Robert's heart to see Jane so distraught, but at least she wasn't angry at them. She hated secrets but she could understand why Robert and Shane had to keep that from her until they could be certain that she was to be trusted.
"We need to get out of here." She surprised Robert by saying. She wasn't usually so abrupt.
"Obviously we all want to get out of here Jane, but you know it's not as simple as that." Robert said.
"I know full well it won't be simple but I'd rather leave or die trying, I will not stay here."
"Shh Jane, be careful, we don't know who's listening. If you're really serious about this, you need to have patience. If we were to even consider this it would take meticulous planning." He whispered.
"What's wrong?" Shane asked, emerging from his room.
Paul couldn't believe how much he had grown in only a few years, he felt almost proud of him, a feeling that made him feel guilty considering he didn't really have a right to be proud. Who did he think he was? Even though they were pretending to be father and son as part of their disguise, no amount of pretending would make him Shane's Dad. He felt a twinge of pain at the thought of Shane's parents- good friends that he had lost too soon. The only relief to that pain was knowing he had saved Shane and that if his dear friends were watching from wherever they were, they'd be happy that he was safe and well.
"Shane, I... uh, I didn't realise you were listening." It still felt strange for Robert to call him Shane, just like he wasn't used to being called Robert. Whenever anyone called his name, it took him a while to realise that they meant him.
"Well I was listening and I would like to know what is going on please." Shane said, very firm for his young age.
"I told Jane everything."
"Everything?"
"Yes, everything. Is that okay?"
"Are you kidding? It's great, I've been so tired of keeping it all from her. I'm sorry we had to keep secrets from you Jane, you've been like a Mum to me and I couldn't stand it."
"I understand Shane." She said, holding her arms open for him.
Shane gladly walked into her arms and asked, "did I hear you talking about escaping?"
"It's a lot easier said than done Shane, you need to understand that. It's very dangerous."
"Dad I think I know that more than anybody."
Shane didn't seem to realise that he had called him Dad; of course he had to around people who didn't know the truth but there was no reason to call him Dad around Jane now. Robert thought to himself that it was probably just habit, but he couldn't help but smile inside. He would love to have Shane call him Dad out of choice, even though it made him feel slightly guilty for taking his friend's place. The more he thought about them, the more he remembered how good, kind and forgiving they were, and the more he realised he was being ridiculous. They would be so happy that their son had someone to look out for him and keep him safe.
Since the incident on the roof where Shane's bullet wound had miraculously healed, there had been no other cases of unusual healing. He had fallen over at school on numerous occasions and his injuries scabbed up at the same rate as any of the other children. It would seem that the effects of the infinosil were only temporary. As much as Robert liked the idea that Shane wouldn't come to any serious harm if he had infinosil, he realised that it could bring unwanted attention and ruin everything. How would they explain that Shane had experienced the traits of someone with infinosil? They'd soon put two and two together. Robert and Shane had to keep a low profile, they weren't sure if they would be recognised or not; they didn't know what kind of links this village had with the previous one.
"Okay, well if you're both serious about this, I know someone at work who is really desperate to get out of here and her husband works really high up so he might be able to help." Robert explained in hushed tones.
"Okay, tell us everything you know." Jane insisted.
