Ch. 23 Worst Wake Up Call
I blinked slowly. I looked around before closing my eyes again. My head ached. Where was I? What was going on?
I slowly started to have some memories flow back to me. The alert, arriving at my house, and...
"Mom!" I shouted, sitting up quickly, "Mom!"
I heard a voice beside me. "It's alright Todd. I'm here."
I calmed down. I turned to her. I saw a sight that would never be removed from my mind.
Although she was generally the same, there were a few noticeable changes. On her face were whiskers. Her normally red hair was now a tan, and out behind her I could see a fluff of fur that appeared to be...
"Mom...you have a tail." I stammered.
She stared me in the eyes. "I'm fine Todd. It could have been worse without your friends." She gestured to Nelly and Harper.
I smiled, and then I remembered what had happened. My eyes welled up with tears. "Mom, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry you had to see that."
She hugged me and whispered "You're alright Todd." She looked me in the eyes. "I'm proud of you." I hugged her again.
After some clarification, Doc told me that they seemed to have improved the strength of the mutagen. Our normal formula only seemed to be able to prevent it from continuing. It didn't completely cure anymore.
I heard a quiet breath in the corner of the room. I smiled upon seeing Adrian watching me. I walked up to him.
"Uh... Thanks, man. Really."
"No problem." He cracked a small smile.
"I'm really sorry if I've given you a hard time before."
"Ditto." He replied. "No pun intended."
I laughed. "First one to the kitchen gets first of my mom's cookies?" I challenged.
A wide grin spread across his face.
"You're on."
