Ch. 27 Regretted Decisions
I really liked Nelly.
She was a sweet little girl. She had that young innocence, and I hated to see her disappointed or upset.
Which was why today wasn't going to be a great day.
We were on another mission, but this time, we had a little help. You see, a while ago we had rescued a Pokemon called Kadabra, and in gratitude he offered his help when necessary. Nelly had formed a tight bond with Kadabra, and she was thrilled when he joined us on this mission.
Later...
I sliced through robots, occasionally stopping to pluck cords out of my claws. The others fared reasonably the same way, and I was beginning to think it would be easy. When who should step out, but-
"Lucario." I muttered. He gave me a squint before crouching into a battle stance. I charged, striking with a claw that he easily knocked back with one of his spikes. He smiled. This wasn't a good sign.
The fight continued for several minutes, Lucario knocking me back against walls. I had only one idea. I had learned that all creatures had aura. Lucario often used Aura Sphere. If I concentrated my aura enough, it might at least weaken Aura Sphere. He launched another Aura Sphere. I closed my eyes and focused. As it approached, I held out my hand. I think it was gonna work.
But I missed.
Aura Sphere soared past me, and I turned around to see it crash into a power core.
In case you're wondering, that's one of those things that it is never good to break.
The lights flickered violently. Lucario, reacting quickly, sprinted out, leaving us in there.
"What are we waiting for? Let's get out of here!" I yelled above the noise.
Harper nodded, as well as Adrian. I turned to Nelly. "Come on, let's go." She pointed forward.
"Kadabra's not moving." She replied. I looked up to see him standing in front of the power core. I ran to him.
"What are you doing?" This place is going to pieces! We need to get out of here!" I yelled to him.
He didn't look towards me, but simply spoke. "The explosion."
"What?"
"The explosion. It will take out anything within 5 miles of here. The town, the people, gone or hurt." He looked at me, determined fire in his eyes. "I cannot allow that to happen."
I sensed what he was getting at. "But...but you'll die! I can't let that happen! Do you know how much Nelly cares about you?"
He nodded slowly. "I do. That is why I must do this. You will never make it in time."
"No, I..." I sighed deeply. "Okay. This is what you have to do. Do it well...we won't forget you."
He simply nodded. He closed his eyes, and a yellow aura grew around him as he focused his psychic power. I ran, grabbing Nelly and holding her close as I went.
"Todd!! What about Kadabra!?" She called out.
"He's doing what he has to do." I managed, struggling with the feelings I felt.
I made it outside before I loosened up on Nelly. She immediately started to head back.
It blew.
I saw what happened before I heard it. Nelly dropping to her knees. The warehouse going up in flames.
Then I heard it.
I could hear the resounding crash of the explosion above all, roaring like a nightmare. And underneath it all was a scream.
"NOOOOOOO!!!!"
I blinked back tears. I had said I hated to see Nelly upset.
So today I was just about ready to kill myself.
This was all my fault.
In more ways than you might think.
