Chapter 3 Nightmare in Flesh (or Scales)
I groaned. I tried to force myself awake, but I was just plain exhausted. I worked to rouse myself. I thought about what I could remember. The banquet, the alarm.
The gas…
I shot awake and got up. I was still in the banquet hall, and the other three kids were still there. I saw no one else there, and was turning to investigate the door when I heard a clang. I turned to see a large thick robot, which had 4 tentacles and robotic legs, which reminded me of springs. It had a bright silver head piece with two red shapes, probably eyes for it.
I was surprised, mostly that I was feeling okay, since I had been sprayed with a toxic gas. I calmed myself and spoke.
”What’s going on here? Who are you?”
”My personal programming is not required for your knowledge. I merely work for the company that hosted this banquet.”
I was confused by what it meant, and stared closely at it, when it’s clear body reflected back at me an image I would never forget.
I saw myself, yet it wasn’t the me I knew. I had rough yellow skin up my arms, and my normally blue eyes were becoming solid black. I saw that my ears weren’t where they were supposed to be, and were on top of my head, coming out from where my hair was. They were also tall and pointed like a dog’s.
”What…What’s happening to me!?!?” I screamed, and the robot began to reply.
”There is no need to fear, human. You will not need to experience this anymore. For a while…”
Which totally wasn’t reassuring me.
”Wait, what!?” I cried, but suddenly felt a needle in my shoulder. I went down clutching it. I felt groggy, and in seconds I was drifting to sleep.
I woke up later. I snapped my eyes open, but found that I was in my own room. I saw it was morning, and it was a relief to me. I suddenly remembered what had happened last night. I glanced myself over, but found that I was completely normal. Nothing strange at all.
I got out of bed and went down to the kitchen, where mom was cooking.
”Hey, mom.” I yawned.
”Oh, Todd you’re alright. Good, the medics told me you would be okay, but I couldn’t help but worry about you.”
I was only thinking about last night, what happened when I first woke up must have been a dream. It was foggy, and nothing that happened in it was proved true. I decided to just get over it.
I later arrived at martial arts lessons, and the day was continuing as usual. I practiced skills, and then I fell over on a move and crashed my head into the floor. It wasn’t really bad, so I was just gonna rub it off and get back into it. But as I rubbed I felt something sticking up in my hair. I got a sick feeling in my stomach, and asked to use the bathroom.
I ran to the mirror and confirmed my fear. The ears I had seen last night were there, and growing upwards.
I burst out and grabbed my bag. Saying some kind of excuse, I exited the building, and just started running. I thought of only one place to go. My science teacher’s house. I don’t know why she teaches 7th grade science when she’s clearly smart enough to work with the best of the best.
Also, she believed in other worlds and aliens. How weird could this be for her?
I reached her house and pulled myself together. I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. After a few seconds, she opened the door.
”Oh hi, Todd. What are you doing here?”
”Well Doc, I…I…”
I sighed. Forget it.
I prepared my self and pulled off the hat I had stuck over my hair.
