Hawks (16) Ari (12/13)

A/N: This is not meant to be a romantic chapter (like sexual attraction). Ari (especially) and Keigo are too young for that here. It's just meant to be more of a friendly meeting with the pull of soulmates if that makes sense. Soulmate love - Innocence and love, but in the purest form. I hope that makes sense.

Was it a stroke of luck? Or was ol' Diane just finally growing soft?

Keigo had no idea. He didn't know what compelled the bitter woman to give him a day-an hour off. But, you can bet he didn't need to ask twice when she did.

Her emotionless words echoed into his brain, their sound rivaling the loud music of his headphones.

"Hmph. Looks like your feathers are completely done for now. Also, your back is starting to bleed too much. How pathetic. You get one hour to rest, Little Keigo. Not a minute more, or you'll regret it."

Faster than she could barely finish her sentence, the winged boy was already in the sky, head thrown back and hair flowing in the wind as he reveled in such a rarity.

It felt foreign, getting to flap his wings at his own pace. Not needing permission to stick his head in the clouds-literally, without a slap on the wrist or a holler in the ear.

Because, the moment he signed life soul away to the demon that was known as Diane Himura, was the same moment he lost the right to Keigo Takami and everything that came with him.

Mind. Body. Soul. None of them existed for himself anymore. He needed permission to use all of them. Pretty soon, he'd probably even need permission for a single, greedy breath to fill his overworked lungs.

But, that's why today-this hour-was so spectacular.

A moment of freedom? Heh, what do ya know about that? It couldn't be true. Diane had to be pulling his leg, right? Hell, it absolutely could have been another one of her psychological tests, where he was actually supposed to say no...

But, like any sixteen year old boy, Keigo just wanted to have fun.

And, unlike any sixteen year old boy, he was so starved of getting to indulge it.

It's been a long time since Keigo ever had a moment like this. To be quite honest, he can't really remember if he ever did.

His mind was going a mile a minute-a concoction of excitement, and anxiety, and adrenaline all stirring in his thin, under fed stomach as he wondered...

'Uhhh.....what should I do now?'

Man, he's just embarrassing, ain't he? The sixteen year old kid-scratch that-what he meant was, the suave hero in training, talks such a big game about itching for some free time.

But, that's what it always was. An itch that he never expected to be scratched. He never thought he'd get this far, honestly. Life's always been about winging it. Heh, get it? Winging it? He just cracks himself up.

And, now, one minute and fifteen seconds of his hour had already been wasted in his thoughts, causing his wings to flutter a little higher with panic as he stressed about how he should relax.

It was only then that he noticed the slight stabbing of his temples-and, no, it wasn't because his music was too loud, as Diane would say.

It's because countless sleepless nights for the last nine-ten years have made him reliant on one certainty substance he could no longer go without.
