10 days. 10 days till the most doomed marriage. I should be in the city, seeing to finally touches on my wedding. Instead, I am in Sparta, trying to get my fiance out of prison while nearly a month pregnant. Today, we plan to go to the prison, present our case and most likely beg. Darcy should be arriving here any minute now with the bank records and photo. If my hunch is correct, that's all I need.
While Brienna, Vanessa and Jo waited for the coach outside, I sat in the saloon, sipping down a whisky and smoking. Yes, I know, I shouldn't be doing either but it's numbing a bit of the pain right now and I really need that. I don't have Jack to lean on through this, I don't know what I'm doing. While I sat there, footsteps approached behind me, "Mind if I sit here?" Bernard asked.
"Go ahead." I said.
"Katherine, you shouldn't be-"
"I'm fine."
He sighed, "How about you eat something, at least. I haven't seen or heard of you eating since you got here."
"I ate something... last night." I lied.
"What?"
"...Something."
Bernard sighed, "I know I haven't known you long, but I'm still worried."
"I will be fine. I made it this far." I said.
"Barely." He said, "When you were throwing up your brains earlier, you were so pale that you looked like a ghost."
"Well, it's a good thing that ghosts aren't real, then." I groaned.
Just before he could argue his point, the coach pulled up out front. I put out my cigarette and put down my cup before getting up and running over. As Darcy stepped out, Brienna was quick to practically tackle him. I love those two, but hate seeing them when I don't have Jack. They are a lot like us, they don't care about society or money. They - Just like myself and Jack - are happy just with each other.
When Darcy finally decided to remove his lips from his wife's and put her down, he looked over at me. We may be grown up and married, but Darcy will always be my best friend. He handed me the folder, "Uh,... In here is everything you asked for." He said softly. I nodded, taking it as I held back more tears. I looked up at him and he just understood, pulling me into a tight hug as I sobbed into his chest.
The girls and Bernard sighed, watching us. As I peaked over Darcy's shoulder, I saw one more person step out of the coach; Davey. I slowly pulled out of the hug and looked, "Davey?" I asked, walking over and hugging him, "What are you doing here? Is Sara with you?" I asked.
"She couldn't do the trip. I wasn't going to since I wanted to stay with her, we think it's almost time for the baby. But, she encouraged me to come help. I figured I know enough things about law that I can help, kinda be a lawyer to you and Jack." He explained.
"Well, thank you for coming." I said with a small smile.
"Kath, I did notice something on this paper while on the way." Darcy said, grabbing a bank document from the folder in my arms.
"Let's go inside. We can sit and look in there." I said.
Everyone nodded in agreement and went inside. I went back to the table I was just at, taking one last sip of my drink as I sat. I could see Darcy and Davey's confused look as they sat on both sides of me. That was a lecture I did not want, nor could I handle right now.
"Katie, was that whisky?" Darcy asked.
I sighed, "Maybe. It's fine."
"You're pregnant. It's not fine." Brienna said.
