Chapter Forty Four

After what seem to be an eternity, the doctors comes out of the operation theater. Kiet jumps to his feet and runs towards the doctor.

Kiet: Doctor, my husband...

Doctor: By God's grace he is out of danger. But he has fracture in his right hand and right leg. We have them in a cast and it will take 4 weeks for them to heal completely.

Everyone let's out a sigh in relief.

Kiet: Can we see him?

Doctor: He is under sedation. We will move him into a room when he gains consciousness. Them you can meet him.

Kiet: Thank you Doctor. Thank you so much.

Doctor: No need to thank me. It's my duty.

After the Doctor leaves, everyone sits down feeling a bit relieved.

Kiet: Guys, I think you need to go back now.

Atid: No, we will stay.

Kiet: But

Mek: We will leave once we see him.

Kiet: Hmm

Aroon: Come, let's get you something to eat.

Kiet: I am not hungry.

Niran: You haven't eaten anything since yesterday evening. You need to have energy to look after PChai.

Mek: He is right. You cannot be weak if you want to take care of him.

Kiet: I don't think he will need me anymore.

Aroon: Kiet

Atid: If you think like that, you don't know him. He may seem to carefree and goofy but he loves with his whole heart. He has never loved anyone like he loves you. He will never let you go Kiet.

A tear escapes Kiet's eyes.

Atid: Go and eat something. We will be here.

Kiet nods his head and goes to the cafeteria with Aroon and Niran.

After 30 minutes:

Chai is finally moved to a room after he gains consciousness. Everyone stands outside the room looking at Kiet.

Mek: Go inside Kiet. He would be waiting for you.

Kiet nods his head. He holds the door handle and takes a deep breathe and then opens the door. As he steps into the room, he can see Chai lying on the bed looking away from the door. He moves closer to the bed and stops at a feet distance from the bed.

Kiet: P....PChai.

He does not get any response.

Kiet: I...

Chai: Sorry.

Kiet: Huh?

Chai: I am sorry. I tried but...

Kiet: What are you saying PChai?

Chai: You asked for a divorce. I...I can't even think of living without you. The only way I could grant your request without me going through the pain of being away from you is...

Before Chai could complete his sentence, he heard a loud thud sound. He quickly turned his head and is shocked to find Kiet on his knees with a horrified expression on his face.

Kiet: Yo...You tried to kill yourself. This accident, you did it deliberate. HOW COULD YOU?

Everyone outside rushes into the room hearing Kiet's loud voice.

Aroon: Kiet..

Kiet: He...he got into this car accident purposely. He tried to kill himself and now he is apologising to me because he is still alive. Does he really think I..I will be happy if he dies. I ...

Kiet breaks down completely. Aroon rushes forward and hugs him tight while he cries in his arms.

Mek: Chai, is he telling the truth? Did you...

Chai does not say anything and just looks away.

Atid: Look at us you bas***d. You dared to try and kill yourself but now you can't answer our question. Speak up you coward.

Chai: YES, I TRIED TO KILL MYSELF. I AM A COWARD AND I DON'T HAVE THE COURAGE TO LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT KIET.

Chai lashes out the pain that he has been hiding in his heart.

Mek: Chai

Chai: He asked me for a divorce. He does not trust me. I will die little by little everyday when he leaves me. So I thought to just end everything all at once.

Chai tried hard to hold back his tears but they escaped from eyes, staining the pillow cover he was lying on.

Everyone in the room could feel their friend's pain. They didn't know how to console them.

Mek: I think you both need to calm down and talk. We will leave you alone for now and come back later.

He looks at everyone and they nod their head, understanding what he wanted them to do. They all exit the room leaving behind Kiet and Chai.
Kiet is still sitting on his knees, lost in his thoughts while Chai is silently watching him.

Kiet: I shouldn't have come back.

Chai looks at Kiet in confusion unable to understand what he is trying to say.

Kiet: If I hadn't come back into your life, your life wouldn't be so painful. You would have found someone worth you and led a happy life.

Chai: Kiet...

Kiet: Do you know PChai, why I hesitated to approach you after coming back to Thailand?

Chai shakes his head in no.

Kiet: Because I felt insecure of myself. I felt like I am not worth you. I didn't have anything that is worth looking at. I am a nobody who has no family, money or status. I feared that some day I will bring you down. Look at us now. My insecurities have finally driven you to take your own life. How am I supposed to live with that P? How?

Chai looks at Kiet who looks completely broken and lost.

Kiet: I was angry. My insecurities and my fear of losing you to someone better caused me to lash out at you. I didn't even realise what I was saying and the word divorce just came out of my mouth. I..I never meant to hurt you. I cannot even think about a life without you. But now...

Kiet takes a deep breathe and then wipes his tears. He looks at Chai with a smile that does not reach his eyes.

Kiet: PChai, I think it's better if I am not part of your life. I am always causing you pain. Four years back I hurt you with my reckless decision and yesterday i once again caused you pain with my words. You are better off without me PChai. So let's break up, this time forever. Thank you. Thank you for all the loving memories we have created together and thank you for loving me so much. You will always be the one in my heart. Goodbye and take care of yourself.

Kiet gets up from the floor and starts to walk towards the door with an empty eyes while there are four people outside the door listening to this conversation with tears in their eyes.
