Epilogue

“I want to praise, Doctor Sevann Roswell. He did it again, just on time.”

I intertwined both of my hands and nodded. “Thank you, Director.” I smiled lightly and nodded once again.

He proceeded to the main topic of our meeting. It was about cardio thoracic surgery and having a Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting. It is the most common type of heart surgery. The surgeon takes a healthy artery or vein from elsewhere in your body and connects it to supply blood past the blocked coronary artery.

You will live with tube in you for a lifetime if a bypass grafting surgery is performed.

“Doctor Castro, prepare the operating room.” The lady doctor nodded as she takes the Director’s command. “Doctor Roswell will again lead the surgery. Meeting has adjourned.” He ended the meeting and stretch his arm to me.

I shook his hand with mine and bow lightly for merely respect. I was happy when I sat down. Doctor Castro came to me while smiling. “You are really good, Doctor Roswell.” She tapped my shoulders, gradually arranging her things.

I closed my laptop and smiled at her. I took some documents from my desk and opened them slightly. I saw the name of my patient then looked at Doctor Castro.

“Well, thank you.” I looked at her. “It has been months since Doctor Mariano got comatosed. I was not aware that we’re doing the Bypass operation without his consent.” I opened up the topic.

She looked at me and just sighed. “That was a hard decision for all of us, since Doctor Mariano has no one to decide for him.”

“I am sure that the Bypass operation will be a big obstacle for him. There is a high possibility that his hands will be weak and he will not be able to operate just like before. Or, either can’t operate anymore.” I continued talking.

She looked even more interested than earlier. I shook my head continually when she didn’t respond. “A good neurosurgeon like him is a great waste to our hospital.”

“Will he lose his title? He have been great since his intern days. He’s the great asset of our hospital.” She frowned. I know what she feels right now. Even me, I am sad with the truth that Doctor Mariano would lose his career.

“Do you think, Doctor Roswell, is there no other way to treat his condition? I mean, it is a great loss for him to lose his career.” She confusedly asked. “I would be forever guilty if ever we did the surgery. I know you have another thoughts for this situation. I am sure that China trained you very well.”

I arched a brow and sighed a little. Tomorrow, we will perform the surgery. The surgery of Doctor Mariano will happen on Thursday, 8 in the morning. This will be the hardest surgery I will ever do in my life. If this surgery will be successful, this will the prettiest comeback for me.

“Doctor Henry Mariano, 40 years old, male.” I started talking. I just finished preparing for surgical attire. I have my head cover, mask, scrub suit, warm–up jacket and shoes, wore on me by nurses.

I looked at my surgical technologist. She have been ready and calmed. I then looked at my patient. I sighed heavily and stretched my hands.

“A median sternotomy will be used to replace the right innominate artery as it becomes stenotic.” I continued talking seriously. This will relieved Doctor Mariano.

A sternotomy, also known as a median sternotomy, is a technique to open up the areas of your body that your breastbone normally covers, such as your heart. In order to see your heart and perform an operation on it, your surgeon makes a cut through your breastbone or sternum and splits the two sides apart.
